The year was 1876, a time of great upheaval where humanity could either embrace the technology that was being forced upon them, or fight it. they could reap the benifits of the steam, coal and iron world that was building life around them, or shun it. They fought. A war ensued that was not between those who agreed and those who did not, but was a chaotic battle fought on too many fronts. Some wished to have all technology for themselves, others wanted it banished. Religion fought with science, man against machine, neighbours against eachother. It was a catastrophy and the governments tried to bring it all under control, but lost when greed overtook sense and soon new types of weapons were being brought to the forefront of all things. It ended with the dissolving of all borders and the reconstruction of societies into the Royal Decree; a list of laws that all could follow and could lead the lives they wanted, with sections of the world put aside for them.
The East, where Asia and Australia refused to have anything to do with these laws and so cut themselves off completely, becoming known as the Wastelands. Spain through Italy became the Borderline between Europe and Africa, where they refused all technology and became simple folk of music, dance and natual entertainment that had many in the north intrigued by this novelty. Africa had their own laws and never interfered with the North, which led to many a myth about them and their 'strange ways'. The Americas were lost to history when all contact was severed in 1927. The reasons why, no one knows, but a single message was transferred before Europe cut contact completely. Only members of the Royal Equestrians (carriers of the Law) knew what it said.
130 years later in 2006, the wars were only read in books and considered a time of choice and extermination of the worthless. A man worked in his workshop tirelessly, greying hair tied back with a leather cord and swathes of grease coating his apron, hands and face. He put down a sleek wrench and picked up another tool, something that looked like a tuning fork, except it had arcs of energy crisscrossing it like little lightning bolts. He held it with ease and put his head into the machine, fiddling around some more before yelping and jumping back, shaking his hand and putting the tool down cautiously. A young woman rushed in and stared at him, breathing hard, then she looked at the tool and rolled her eyes. "Professor, there must be an easier way to get a local charge without burning your hand off each time." He looked at her in grave amusement, bushy eyebrows raising before he looked back at the growing monstrosity with satisfaction. "It is almost finished, and I'll not be cutting any corners with this one." he ran a glaved hand almost lovingly over the brass exterior and tested a couple of levers, smiling as they turned smoothly and gears made satisfying clanks from within the machine. "It'll get me in the books it will." he whispered. The girl smiled sadly and made her way quietly out of the room, closing the door gently behind her.
That night near midnight, a great flash of light lit up the cobblestone streets outside, streaming from the windows of the workshop. It was gone within seconds, but would have disasterous effects on others who had no idea what they were in for.

This is a steampunk RP, but with a twist. The basic plot being that you are placed in an extraodinary situation with others who practically feel the same, and you need to find your way home.
You will be playing a normal person in this world, two years ago on October 15 2006.
You are pulled suddenly through a portal into an alternate dimension, where the Industrial Revolution became an all out war and all things since then have not evolved past steam, coal, Victorian fashion and ideals...but boy have they adapted it. You can come from anywhere and any situation. This is all up for discussion within this thread so please feel free to ask away.
in the brainstorming section. It also gives some vital pointers as to what kind of characters would work with the setting.
There is a list of things here that you should also know.
- This is practically an Adult RP, with people playing it needing an open mind and can be able to cope with graphic and stressful written situations. Also you need to have good grammer...period.
- You CAN die. If a situation happens and I can no longer protect your character from whatever they have become a part of, the chances of death become larger. I do try to avoid it, but it can happen.
- Excessive swearing just for the sake of it, please avoid it if you can.
- Fade to black...use this when it's needed or I shall be displeased. Am not sure others reading or playing will be too appreciative of written porn.
- You have freedom of choice. If you wish to divert away from the group, you may, but be aware that this can make it more difficult for me if too many people do it. It is still possible but I am basically hoping you would make a character in the beginning who would have the intelligence to understand it is safer in a group in a world you do not understand, than it is to be a lone travellor. (this freedom of choice also applies if you change your mind about wanting to go back, and wish to stay)
- This rp will have a beginning, a middle and an end. I will not railroad any plot unless you are on a railroad and will try to be as flexible as possible, though I do tend to make things feel like a story and not just a set of encounters.
- This is roleplay heavy. There WILL be fighting and such and dramatic situations, but there can be fun found to in experimenting with how good your grammer is.
- Also, it's not ALL serious. You have been pulled from your home and shoved into a world that could kill you, but it doesn't mean you are moody and freaking out consistantly. Hopefully some humour can come into the picture and sarcasm is gladly welcome. Tragedy and Humour and all genres between can be used in this one and anything can happen from simply responding to a situation in a different way.

Equipment *Cell phone *Notepad w/ pencil *A suitcase of assorted clothes, hygiene products, etc.
Personality Wolf is a kind and compassionate person and is generally liked by the people he knows. He has a very black and white view on things, and it shows in his writing. Only very rarely does he compromise or find a shade of gray in anything. This uncompromising demeanor does not stop him from being a good person though, and Wolf has never lost a friend yet because of this.
Wolf has been a huge fan of soccer(FOTBALL!!!) his whole life, regardless of what other people think about the sport. He also tries to excel in everything he does, even if its completely mundane(like taking out the trash). Wolf also tends to over-analyze small details, though not to the point where people get annoyed by it.
Wolf is generally not scared of anything, but one thing that will scare him out of his wits are insects(especially bees since he's allergic), and even though he is very open about his personal life, he never tells anyone about his fears. Regardless of the "black and white" personality, Wolf is anything but neat and tidy when it comes to his living space, and he doesn't care if there is paper strewn about his floor.
Physical Description Wolf has a lean, muscular build. He has well-groomed brown hair and turquoise eyes. He usually wears suits when he goes to the his publishers. On the weekends, after work, and when he exercises(which usually consists of nature hikes) he wears casual button-up shirts and blue jeans(or mesh shorts). Most of his shirts are green, red, or orange. Sometimes he wears his casual clothes to work, but usually on days when he had been writing all night. He has been called charming, handsome, and gorgeous by many girls all over Germany. Though, that could also be due in part to his book's popularity.
History When Wolf was six, his mother was killed in a car accident. Throughout childhood, he excelled in all areas of academics, but he lacked motivation to go further with his interest in writing due to his father's constantly telling him he won't amount to sh*t.
In high school, Wolf was the best soccer player on the team, which could have gotten him a place in any university in the country by his junior year in high school. His 4.0 GPA throughout high school, however, was what gave him the reason to go to Oxford, his dream school. At the beginning of his Senior year, his father was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was sent to an insane asylum. This sparked his writing motivation and he wrote "State of Mind", which is a very embellished version of his father's experience.
Upon graduation, Wolf went on a trip with his friends to Africa. During the trip, one of his friends died in Sudan and the trip was canceled to bring him back to Germany. In the days that followed, he began writing his second novel "Last Stop Motel", which is a fictionalized retelling of his experience in Africa, and the book was published one month before he started school in Oxford. Once in Oxford, Wolf made friends with one of the teachers, John Sheppard, who teaches Oneirology(the scientific study of dreams).
Now graduated, Wolf is now driving home to publish his next novel: "The Edge of Dreams".
Any Additional notes -Wolf is color blind. -Wolf has published two best-selling novels :"Last Stop Motel" and "State of Mind" -His current book, "Edge of Dreams", a psychological and supernatural thriller, keeps his attention until ungodly hours. -Wolf only writes with mechanical pencils or pens, he hates regular pencils. -Wolf has a difficulty sleeping after writing for long periods of time. -His favorite author is Stephen King. -His favorite book is 'Nightfall' by Isaac Asimov -His favorite song is 'Black Magic Woman' by Santana -His favorite band is Aerosmith -Wolf's favorite movie is 'Psycho' -Wolf is an avid media pirate, he hasn't bought a song or movie since he downloaded Limewire two years ago.

Asty indeed...Dante?
And accepted.
As for the French thing...
The setting will begin in England, but that is not the point. It is not where the players will end up, but whether or not you wish for your character to be able to communicate with the rest in the group. French is French and there is only science in this world, no magic. It cannot suddenly make someone understand everything you say because you fell through a portal. That's going just a little too Star Trekky for my tastes.
But if the players ever somehow end up in Holland by some fluke, I might just abuse it a little. Germany too as my understanding of the grammer ain;t too shabby. But in general, I would mostly just put it in italics and say the language, so anyone who can speak it will repeat...and may even lie during translation if they so wish.
Yet another link to find out more about the genre.

James "Slash" McCoy
Gender: Male
Age: 34
Location of current residence: Mexico, American accent.
Profession: Former military officer, Cook, Ex-Con (One count of murder II), Resort Owner
Skills: Street-smart, expert in survival tacticts in and out of the city, good with modern weapons, not so much with anything made prior to the first world war.
Equipment: Hand-gun, floral-print T-shirt, blue jeans, switch blade, sunglasses.
Personality: Gruff, but not aggressive unless provoked. However, when provoked his Celtic blood really flares.
Physical Description: Deep black hair, unshaven, and towering in at six and a half feet in height. His eyes are dark, his skin ruddy and tanned, this man is quite clearly a soldier's soldier, a man's man. He has a massive scar across his left cheek.
History: Five years. Five years in the slammer, for a crime he never committed. His family disowned him, his friends abandoned him, even those he had served with. All because of a fiery temper and a reputation. But he never killed that chef. All the evidence against him had been circumstantial, but even so it took two years before there was a break in the case in his favor, and his attorney, the one person who still had hope in him, was able to get him out, and get him a full pardon, with the real killer finally arrested and locked up. But, even so, a lot changes in five years. When he first went in, there was no War in Iraq, no War in Afghanistan, no War on Terror even. Bush had only just been elected for his first term, CSI New York wasn't even an idea yet, and there had still been "Twin Towers" in NYC. And all that was only in September, 2001.
A lot changes in five years. The world will change, and though you might be isolated from the world, that doesn't mean you don't change. A man needs a killer instinct to stay alive in prison. Luckily for James "Slash" McCoy, that's exactly what he had. Though he never got in fights, he never needed too. He built himself a reputation through a few minor scuffles that didn't even appear on his record, relied on intimidation and his uncanny ability to always be in the right place, at the right time, with the right people. He survived five years doing that.
And before that, he had been serving customers as a Sioux Chef at a little restaurant in a small country town, where he had allegedly killed a chef. The truth was, it wasn't him, but one of the other Sioux Chefs, whose wife had been cheating on him with the Head Chef, who was the victim of the crime. A crime of passion, they would call it. Five years after the fact.
And before that, Slash had served as a military private in several scuffles the world over started by several presidents, beginning at the age of 18.
A lot can change, in 5 years.
Family: None who still call themselves family, but he does have a living mother, father, younger sister, and grandmother. Details are up to the GM.
Any Additional notes: -Expert cook. -Acheived the rank of "Sergeant" before retiring from military life to pursue his real passion, that of a professional chef. -Obtained his scar in a prison fight, which he won unarmed even though his opponent was wielding a smuggled weapon. He was not charged with anything, despite having broken his opponent's arm. His opponent was confined to Solitary for a week. -Left prison with a spotless record, and was put under witness protection. After much bargaining, he was permitted to move to his current residence in Mexico, where he was running a small tourist resort, complete with full professional kitchen, using money he had saved up and inherited from his Great Grandfather.

But, even so, a lot changes in five years. When he first went in, a black man would never have thought of running for president, let alone a woman. When he went in, no one had even heard of the LHC, and now everyone was up in arms about it. When he went in, Bush Jr. hadn't even finished his first term as President.

Whitey I like how he's going. You got a survivor as a character which adds to the diversity while at the same time achieving some calmer moments. I am a bit thoughtful about whether or not he could actually commit murder if he wanted to, or is the whole gruffness really a coverup for a big softy underneath (who will protect those he cares about) which is why it was so easy to convict him.
Also the timeline might need to be worked out. Not even iPhone was invented at this time (not really relevent, but an example), though it was in the planning stages, and Obama had not been heard of as of yet. Plus Clinton was still being remembered in politics but would not be thought of as a runner for president yet. A lot happened in 5 years, but a lot also has happened in the last 2.
