Hells Angel leader Mark Guardado killed in San Francisco
By Associated Press
Thursday, September 4, 2008 - Added 16h ago

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco police are investigating the slaying of a Hells Angels leader in the city.

Mark "Papa" Guardado, 45, the president of the motorcycle club’s San Francisco chapter, was shot Tuesday night about a mile from the group’s clubhouse. Guardado died at San Francisco General Hospital.

Police think Guardado may have been in fight with a rival in another motorcycle group before he was killed. Witnesses told investigators that he and the gunman struggled before the shooting and that the suspect fled on a motorcycle.

The San Francisco chapter is one of the oldest Hells Angels branches in the country. The half-centry-old club is known for an outlaw image, and its members have been a target of police anti-gang and anti-drug efforts.

Mark Guardado, SF Hell's Angels President, Gunned Down
by Joe DeFranceschi September 04, 2008

Mark Guardado, 46, the president of San Francisco's chapter of the Hell's Angels motorcycle gang was shot to death in front of a bar in the city's Mission District.

Police are unsure who shot Mark Guardado and what might have been there motive but rival southern California motorcycle gang The Mongols are suspected. Suspects say that Guardado was in a physical altercation with his shooter before bullets were fired and that the shooter fled the scene on a motorcycle.

Mark Guardado was the main suspect in an assault with a deadly weapons case, stemming from a bar fight in Petaluma, California. Some think that Guardado's murder might have been connected to this fight or another similar brawl for which the Hell's Angels are known.

Police now worry that members of Guardado's Hell's Angels will seek revenge on his murder. That means that they are providing extra protection in the area and around neighborhoods that are home to members of The Mongols.

Mongols motorcycle gang member sentenced for murdering rival Hells Angels member

SAN FRANCISCO -- A member of the Mongols motorcycle gang was sentenced in federal court in San Francisco on Tuesday to life in prison without parole for murdering a member of the rival Hells Angels motorcycle club in the city in 2008.

Christopher Ablett, 39, of Modesto, was found guilty in February of murdering Mark "Papa" Guardado, president of the San Francisco Hells Angels chapter, by shooting and stabbing him during a fight outside a bar in the Mission District of the city on Sept. 2, 2008.

A jury in the court of U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg convicted Ablett of four federal charges: murder in aid of racketeering, assault with a deadly weapon, using a gun in a violent crime and using a gun in a murder.

U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag said testimony at the trial indicated that Ablett, armed with a revolver and a 12-inch military knife, came to San Francisco to visit a friend.

Haag said that when Guardado heard that Ablett was in the bar, he came to the street outside the bar and approached Ablett, according to witnesses at the trial.

A fight then broke out and Ablett stabbed Guardado four times and shot him twice, Haag said.

Ablett was sentenced today by Seeborg, who ordered him to serve two concurrent life terms plus one consecutive life term. There is no parole from federal life sentences, according to Haag.

Haag said in a statement, "The defendant killed a complete stranger for no reason other than his membership in a rival motorcycle gang.

"This sentence should send a clear message that there is a heavy price to pay for engaging in such a senseless act of violence," she said.
