KITAKYUSHU -- A 55-year-old former gangster was fatally shot in a residential area here over the weekend, police said.
Hisao Uehara, 55, an unemployed man from Kokurakita-ku in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, was shot in the head and other parts of his body in a residential area in Kokurakita-ku at around 7:56 p.m. on Sunday. He was taken to a hospital but died from brain injuries shortly after 10 p.m.
The victim reportedly used to belong to a criminal gang affiliated with Kudo-kai criminal syndicate but had left the gang.
According to Fukuoka Prefectural Police, a resident living near the crime scene reported to police, saying, "I heard a sound like a gun being fired." Police officers rushed to the scene and found Uehara lying on the premises of a house bleeding.
A witness said that a man of thin build about 170 centimeters tall and wearing blackish clothes left the scene on foot, according to police. The area is about 2 kilometers southeast of JR Kokura Station.
In Kitakyushu, a series of shooting incidents targeting such places as the office of a construction company and the home of a realtor have taken place since last year. None of these incidents have been resolved yet.
The latest case was the first fatal shooting incident in Kitakyushu since August 2004 when the second son of a high-ranking member of a criminal gang was fatally shot by a relative, who later committed suicide.
