What has this country of mine come to,these savages are causing mayhem in my home town of Limerick city, they are involved in a savage feud with the Keane crime gang, who's leader gets out in Feb 09 (they badly need him on the street) as they are been wiped out.

Thing is that's its the innocent who are suffering, people been killed by mistaken identity,a popular rugby player just killed last week all because they (MCcarthy-Dundons) thought he was a member of the Keane's.

A 3 an 4 yr old brother an sister nearly burned alive in a car petrol bombed by these animals (suffered horrific injuries).

We have armed patrols on the streets here now, that's how bad its gotten, see its not about drugs anymore, its pure hatred between these now,and it will end with the Keane's been wiped out i think, unfortunately.Yes they are scum but they really are the lesser of 2 evils, the others are brutal in their quest and don't care who they kill or torture, there's reports down here that they've been involved in up to 20 gang rapes (although the police deny it) but a local doctor has come out in the media lately and said he treated the girls.

Anyway,i find it hard to believe how bad this country of mine has gotten over the last decade or so,the new generation of hoods are pure evil with no regard for human life or the law.

They light at the end of the tunnel is the decent people here are so feed up with it that they are trying to organise protest marches in the gangs strongholds, maybe a show of strenght is whats needed,i don't know really, but the time has come when something has to be done.

Limerick gang was explosives buyer

08 September 2008
By David Hurley
CRIMINAL elements in Limerick were dealt another significant blow over the weekend when gardai seized a massive amount of explosives, which were destined for a gang based on the Southside of the city.
The seizure of 17.5kgs of commercial explosives including gelignite in county Galway, was made less than 72 hours after police in Holland recovered over 200 guns, many of which it is believed were destined for the same criminal gang.

A number of people were arrested following the Europe-wide operation on Friday evening when a car was intercepted in Oranmore.

Four men and a woman were still being questioned this Monday in relation to the Galway explosives seizure, which was made as part of an ongoing operation against organised crime in the West of Ireland.

Limerick gangs activities curtailed, says Ahern
CHARLIE TAYLOR
Although criminal gangs based in Limerick continue to be active, their ability to act has been curtailed due to increased Garda activity, Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern said today.

Mr Ahern was speaking during a visit to the city where he was briefed by the Garda commissioner Fachtna Murphy on the progress of the Garda's operation against criminal gangs operating in the Limerick area.

The Minister was also updated on the investigation into the recent brutal killing of Shane Geoghegan.

Mr Geoghegan (28) was shot dead near his home in the Kilteragh estate in Dooradoyle on November 9th, in a case of mistaken identity. His attacker is believed to have mistaken him for a Limerick drug dealer who was the intended target.

Mr Ahern was accompanied on his visit to the city by the Minister for Defence and Limerick East TD Willie O’Dea and Minister for Overseas Development Aid Peter Power.

Speaking following this morning's briefing, Mr Ahern said that Garda activity in Limerick was at its highest ever level, with a 12 per cent increase in Garda resources in the past year alone.

An additional 90 gardaí have been stationed in the Limerick division during the past 12 months, 80 of whom are based in the city. Additional resources have led to the increased seizures of drugs and guns and the fall-off in gun crime in Limerick this year.

"Although the criminal gangs based in Limerick continue to be active, it is clear from the briefing I have received that the pressure being exerted by the gardaí on these gangs is having encouraging results. The capacity of these criminal factions to carry out their deadly trade is being increasingly curtailed," said Mr Ahern.

The Minister added that no resources would be spared in tracking down those responsible for the murder of Mr Geoghegan.

While in Limerick Mr Ahern announced €200,000 funding for two new CCTV schemes in the southside of the city. The areas covered under the new schemes include Southill. Kincora Park, John Carew Park, Keyes Park and the O'Malley Park housing estates.

In total, the area covered under the schemes extends to about 1,100 houses.

Yes,both sides of the fueding gangs have links with Dublins crime gangs, they exchange weapons and manpower for jobs.

The murder of an innocent in Dublin on behalf of a dublin godfather was carried out by Limerick thugs.

this is a long read but a section near the bottom refers to some of the main players in Limerick involved with this womens murder.

Isn't it amazing what a little heat from the law can bring about, lol.

It will never last,as soon as Kieran Keane gets released in feb09 the war will be on,he is the head of the Keane/Collopy faction.

There were no Keanes involved with this handshake.

Limerick gang takes over city pub

Gardai are keeping a close eye on the city pub

« Previous « PreviousNext » Next »View GalleryADVERTISEMENTPublished Date: 23 January 2009
By Anne Sheridan
ONE of Limerick's most notorious drugs gangs is understood to have taken over a city-centre pub.
The Criminal Assets Bureau and the gardai are now investigating the pub's operations, a garda source confirmed this Thursday.

Garda and legal sources believe the gang have done a "secret" deal to run the pub.

"The owner has it leased out to a young man from County Limerick. He (the young man] has now allowed the drugs gang to take charge of the pub, totally without the owner's permission. It has been raided a number of times and the Gardai are keeping a very close watch on the premises," said a Garda source.

Members of the gang have been seen outside the pub, swigging bottles of beer.

However, they are likely to be prevented from acquiring the public house if they apply for a transfer of ownership of the bar at Limerick District Court, where gardai are likely to object.

The auctioneer in charge of the premises confirmed that it is currently being rented out. While there is no reserve offer on the sale of the pub, it is believed that it could sell for in excess of €1million.

In a separate development, fears that violence could break out in the city have been anticipated in advance of the release of Christy Keane, 48, from the Midlands prison in February. Mr Keane received a 10-year sentence in 2002 after he was convicted with possession of cannabis worth in excess of €240,000, found in a coal bag in St Mary's Park, where he is reputed to own in the region of 38 properties.

However, gardai said they could not comment on any individual cases or on any upcoming operational matters.

Meanwhile, Christy Keane's son, Liam Keane, 24, of Singland Gardens, Ballysimon, was this Tuesday sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession of a gun, ammunition and driving a stolen vehicle.

Fears were heightened last Sunday night, when four vehicles allegedly belonging to the Keane family were burnt out across the city. Last Sunday night, a 2008 registered Range Rover was burnt out in a coal yard in the city. It is reputed to be owned by Christy Keane's nephew Owen Treacy. His sister's car, a Peugeot 306, was also burnt out.

Two other vehicles - a 2005 registered Volkswagen Passet and a 2004 registered Toyota Avensis - were also destroyed. The total damage to the vehicle is estimated to cost in the region of €100,000.

Fine Gael Cllr Kevin Kiely, chairman of the Joint Policing Committee in Limerick, said he hopes there would not be renewed hostilities as a result of the release of numerous high-profile local criminals.

"I would appeal to the people involved in the feud just to get on with their lives. We have seen what has happened down through the years, with people being handed down lengthy sentences and the loss of lives. I would urge people just to step back," said Cllr Kiely.

Earlier this week, Fine Gael councillor Diarmuid Scully urged the Criminal Assets Bureau to investigate whether a house allegedly purchased by Christy Keane in Lynwood Park, Singland, a number of years ago was bought with the proceeds of crime.

TENSIONS between Limerick criminal gangs have escalated after a series of arson attacks in which four vehicles have been destroyed.

Just a month before Christy Keane -- a leading crime figure in the Keane gang -- is released from prison, gardai in the city are on high alert after arson attacks on vehicles belonging to four of his relatives.

The 48-year-old is due to be freed from the Midlands prison in mid-February and the feud, which was just beginning when he was jailed in 2001, shows no sign of cooling on the eve of his release.

Last year, chief executive of Limerick's regeneration agencies, Brendan Kenny, tried to initiate peace talks following a lull in the feud, but it is clear that old wounds continue to fester following a succession of arson attacks in St Mary's Park last weekend.

On Sunday night, a 2008-registered Range Rover was found burnt out following an attack in the coal yard where it was parked.

The vehicle, owned by Keane's nephew, Owen Treacy, is estimated to have been worth over €70,000

Treacy was abducted with his uncle, Kieran Keane, in 2003 by the McCarthy-Dundon gang. His uncle was shot dead while Treacy was stabbed repeatedly.

Treacy's sisters' car, a Peugeot 306, has also been burned out.

Also at the weekend, the 2005-registered Volkswagen Passat belonging to a family member was destroyed.

Arsonists also gutted the 2004-registered Toyota Avensis belonging to a female member of the family.

The damage to the vehicles is in excess of €100,000, but it is the repercussions that may be inflicted upon the culprits that worry authorities most in Limerick.

As far as officers are concerned, the arson attacks are a direct message to the original crime chief of Limerick gangs that his enemies are ready and waiting for his release.

Christy Keane (48), who comes out of prison a grandfather, will have to return to jail if he wants to see his only son, Liam, who was yesterday jailed for the same period his father received -- 10 years.

Arrested

Liam Keane was arrested last May after driving a stolen car with a loaded Glock handgun which had been used to shoot McCarthy-Dundon gang member, Jimmy Collins less than a fortnight beforehand.

When interviewed by gardai, Liam Keane was asked why did the gangs hate each other so much and replied: "That's life, that's the way it goes."

Liam Keane told officers he picked the gun up in a field, "out the Ballysimon way", and had it because of the way his uncle, Kieran Keane, ended up.

Already some of Christy Keane's closest neighbours are fearing his release and have sold their homes.

Fine Gael councillor Diarmuid Scully told a meeting of Limerick City Council's economic and planning committee that two homes in Lynwood Park, Singland, have been sold by residents ahead of Christy Keane's return.

Mr Scully urged the Criminal Assets Bureau to examine whether the home was bought with the proceeds of crime.

On top of this, detectives in the city this week uncovered further links between some of country's most dangerous criminals and the Keane and Collopy gangs based in St Mary's Park with the arrest of a major convicted criminal from Dublin.

The fun an games will resume once Christy's released.

It wouldn’t be Sunday without a Limerick gang related story in one of the papers.

This week brings us the report in the News of the World that Gardai have uncovered an elaborate plan to kill Christy Keane, the brother of murdered criminal Kieran Keane and father of the recently jailed Liam Keane.

The paper claimed that members of the McCarthy-Dundon gang had ringfenced as many as thirty guns to be used on the ambush of Keane on his release from Portlaoise Prison next months.

The paper also claims that the plan was to intercept him on the N7 on his way back to Limerick City. The plan was alledgedly uncovered yesterday.

Keane received a ten year sentence in 2002 for drugs offences and is due to be released in February of this year after spending seven years in jail. His son is currently serving a ten year sentence after he and another man were found in possession of a gun.

The paper has also maid the claim that Keane pretty much rules the roost in Portlaoise, even having the likes of notorious Dublin criminal John Gilligan at his beck and call.

There has been a spate of gang related activity immediately following the jailing of Liam Keane for weapons offences, and in advance of next month’s release of his father, Christy Keane, who was jailed for possession of drugs back in 2002.

Over the weekend, four cars belonging to members of the Keane family were burnt out. One vehicle, a €70,000 Range Rover belonging to Owen Treacy, was found burnt out in a coal yard on the north side of the city.

An attempt to burn out a fast food outlet which members of the Keane family have an interest in, was foiled after Gardai arrived on the scene.

On Monday night, a Dublin man who was jailed in relation to a murder in 1996, was arrested for obstructing Gardai whilst in the company of members of the Collopy family.

On Tuesday, Judge Tom O’Donnell jailed Scott Delaney for obstructing Gardai after he gave them false details. The judge handed down a three month sentence.

Delaney (30) from Palmerstown in Dublin had been involved in the murder of Mark Dwyer in Finglas in 1996 along with his father Cotten Eyed Joe Delaney.

Dwyer was abducted, tortured, shot in the back of the head, and had his body dumped in a field.

Limerick man Liam Keane, who was jailed for 10 years last week on firearms charges, has been sentenced to a further six months in prison after a mobile phone was discovered in his cell.

The 24-year-old, with an address at Singland Gardens, Ballysimon, pleaded guilty to the charge at Limerick District Court.

The phone was discovered in the bunk in his cell in August of last year.

Judge Elizabeth McGann imposed a six-month sentence to begin once his 10-year sentence is complete.

CAB raid pub under control of gang
By Barry Duggan
Wednesday January 28 2009

THE Criminals Assets Bureau (CAB) and armed gardai yesterday morning raided a pub that has been taken over by one of the country's criminal gangs.

Officers examined the stock and accounts of the licensed premises which the Collopy gang from Limerick are running.

The outfit who are based in the St Mary's Park area of the city acquired a lease on the pub in recent weeks through a frontman while leading gang members are financing the new venture.

After leaving the pub, gardai were called back there yesterday evening when a stabbing incident took place in the premises.

A man who is believed to have been attending a funeral earlier in the day was attacked and stabbed in the pub, but managed to walk outside before gardai arrived.

Officers found blood in the pub but the injured party did not make any complaint. His injuries are not life threatening.

Yesterday morning, officers from the CAB supported by the Armed Response Unit raided the Limerick pub.

The Irish Independent understands that the officers are examining how some of the alcohol being sold on the premises was acquired. Investigations are continuing.

Brian Collopy's home, Ashby House at Fedamore, Co Limerick, was seized by the CAB three years ago as part of a €470,000 settlement.

Last year, a Toyota Landcruiser, worth in excess of €100,000, belonging to Philip Collopy, was seized by the CAB.

CONOR LALLY, Crime CorrespondentGUN CRIME in Limerick plummeted last year following the jailing of a number of criminal figures in the city and a major Garda push against those involved in several gangland feuds.

Gardaí in the city have seen their numbers increase over the past two years and have put in place a number of specialist operations to combat gangland violence.

The result has been a 60 per cent decrease in 2008 in crimes involving the discharging of firearms.

Senior officers who spoke to The Irish Times said they were hopeful the extra Garda deployment and the establishment of new armed regional support units would have a lasting effect.

According to provisional figures obtained from Garda sources, there were 43 known incidents in the Limerick division last year during which firearms were discharged. This was down from 103 such incidents in 2007.

The murder of Shane Geoghegan (28) in Dooradoyle in November in a case of mistaken identity has resulted in a major Garda investigation into members of the gang behind the killing.

A team of 50 gardaí is investigating that shooting and these have been aided by a number of specialist Garda units based in Dublin. Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy recently said he was confident the murder investigation would prove successful.

Gardaí based in the city say the size and intensity of the investigation has greatly frustrated the ability of many criminals to engage in gangland crime.

The same sources said tensions may increase in the main Limerick gangland feud – between the Collopy-Keane gang and the McCarthy-Dundons – when drug dealer Christie Keane is released from prison in the middle of next month.

Keane (48) will complete a 10- year prison sentence for drugs on February 18th. He is the brother of Kieran Keane, who was shot dead by the McCarthy-Dundon gang in January 2003.

Christie Keane’s son Liam Keane (24) was sentenced to 10 years in prison last Tuesday for possession of a loaded Glock handgun in Limerick last May.

Both Liam Keane and the man jailed with him – Greg Crawford, St Munchin’s Street, St Mary’s Park – have been in prison since their arrest with the weapon in a stolen car.

Both were wearing gloves at the time and their trial heard the gun was ready for “immediate use”.

Other cases in Limerick during the year in which people were jailed for gun crime include:

Garrett Fitzgerald (32), Claughaun Avenue, jailed for four years in October. He walked into a bar masked and with a loaded shotgun and threatened a man who had earlier told him to leave because he was drunk.

The victim had his five-year-old son sitting on his knee at the time;

Michael Ryan (19), St Munchin’s Street, St Mary’s Park, and a 14-year-old boy were jailed for four and 2½ years respectively in October for their role in a shooting at a house in the city last April;

A man in his 40s is currently on remand awaiting sentencing for possession of a loaded handgun in the city last year;

A suspected member of the Continuity IRA in Limerick is also awaiting sentence on firearms charges;

Nine other well-known criminals who have been engaged in feuding in the city are currently in jail awaiting trial or sentencing.

In total, there were 42 cases before the courts in Limerick last year in which people were charged with firearms offences.

Despite the Garda successes against the feuding gangs, Limerick witnessed a number of gun murders last year.

Mr Geoghegan was shot dead in November in a case of mistaken identity linked to Limerick’s main feud.

On April 5th, Mark Moloney (40) was shot in the Garryowen area. A man has been charged with that killing.

On April 7th, the body of James Cronin (20), Ballinacurra Weston, was found in a shallow grave. He had been shot in the head in a feud-related murder.

Dissident IRA group's chilling warning

« Previous « PreviousNext » Next »View GalleryPublished Date: 30 January 2009
By John Hogan
A SPOKESMAN for the Continuity IRA in Limerick has denied that the organisation was responsible for pipe bombs which were discovered in the city this week and warned that if criminal gangs continue to use the deadly devices, they will suffer "severe consequences".
Using a recognised codeword, a man contacted the Limerick Leader on Wednesday, saying that he wished to make a statement on behalf of the Continuity IRA, in order to put an end to speculation about who was behind the pipe bombs.

Two controlled exADVERTISEMENTplosions were carried out by the Army Bomb Disposal Unit in Glasgow Park on Monday night, following the discovery of four pipe bombs in the estate. The planned search of the area was part of an ongoing investigation into serious crime in the Roxboro Road garda district.

Alongside the explosives at the base of a wall bordering on Childers Road, gardai also discovered two sawn-off shotguns, a rifle and about 60 rounds of ammunition.

Investigators said on Tuesday of this week that they had still not ruled out "dissident Republican" links to the guns and bombs found in Glasgow Park.

However, the Continuity IRA has claimed "criminal gangs" in Limerick are responsible for the manufacture of the deadly haul. A chilling warning was sent out by the Munster spokesman for the illegal organisation to gangs, who he claimed were selling the bombs to members of Limerick's feuding factions.

"The Continuity IRA had no hand, act or part in the manufacture of the pipe bombs which were discovered in the city earlier this week and we want to send out a stern warning to those who were behind it," the spokesman claimed.

"This was the work of criminal gangs working in the Kennedy Park and Southill area who are selling them on to feuding gangs at a cost of €1,000 per bomb. The Continuity IRA has warned these gangs in the past to desist with the use of these bombs which could cause serious harm to children.

"If they fail to stop manufacturing them and continue to pass the blame on to the continuity IRA then they will suffer severe consequences. This is a dangerous game they are playing."

Meanwhile, Insp Seamus Ruane of Roxboro Road Garda Station said this week that he was confident lives had been saved as a result of the planned searches.

"It's extremely significant and we're delighted to have such a vast array of armaments taken off the streets of Limerick and certainly it augurs well for public safety, and we are satisfied that we have certainly saved a lot of lives as a consequence of the find," he said.

An insite into gangland Limerick..

organised crime limerick style
Minister for Justice McDowell’s new crime laws have brought organized crime back into the national spotlight. In recent weeks Dublin has been rocked by a series of high profile gangland killings. Despite a relative calm over the last 15 months the Limerick feud remains the bloodiest in Irish history in terms of both the number of killings and non fatal attacks. Over the past month violence has again reared its head in Limerick. 2 murders and 7 non-fatal shooting incidents have highlighted the futility of the Gardai’s tactics in dealing with the city’s violent underworld. The feud in Limerick has also given us our greatest knowledge of the organized crime problem in the country. Members of the cities feuding factions have displayed savagery of a terrifying nature as well as a blatant disregard for the Gardai and the Justice system through their ongoing intimidation of state witnesses. Here is a timeline of some of the major incidents since the turn of the century and a list of who’s who in the cities underworld.

Oct 26 2000; Anne Keane, the wife of crime boss Christy’s Brother Anthony, is attacked by the two teenage daughters of John Ryan while collecting her daughter from Bishop Street primary school. She is brutally beaten before being held on the ground and having her face slashed with a Stanley blade.

19 Nov 2000; Former Keane henchman Eddie Ryan is shot dead in The Moose Bar on Cathedral Place. He is shot 11 times at point blank range by his two assailants; bullets travel through both his lungs and tear through his spinal chord. The killers are armed with a 357 magnum revolver and 9 mm pistol respectively. Two innocent bystanders, Mary and Deirdre Reddan, receive gunshot wounds to the abdomen and chest. Keane families second in command, Kieran, and Paul Coffey are charged with murder. Coffey makes a statement naming Keane as the killer but withdraws the statement in the face of relentless intimidation.

21 Aug 2001; Christy Keane is found walking through St. Mary’s Park with a sack filled with 240,000 euro worth of cannabis. At his trial the following year Daniel Braddish appeared in the court claiming it was he who police had caught with the drugs not Keane. It is alleged he was offered money or threatened into taking the fall. Keane was eventually sentenced to ten years in Portlaise prison

6 Sept 2001; 18 year old Eric Leamy is stabbed to death in Lee Estate. Liam Keane, son of Christy, is charged with the murder after a group of witnesses make statements. Six key witnesses fail to corroborate their statement at his trial. Mr. Justice Paul Csrney states the six must be suffering from “collective amnesia”. In April of this year Keane was in court for threatening to kill Eric’s brother John Paul. John Paul was subsequently shot earlier this month.

Jan 2002; Eddie Ryans widow Mary is taunted by members of the Keanes outside Limerick courthouse. “The maggots are ‘atein Eddie” they were heard to have said. When she responded with abuse of her own Kieran Keane approached her and head butted her twice in the face, breaking her nose in the process.

5 March 2002; Eddie Ryan Jnr stabs Liam Keane in the back in the city centre. When asked who attacked him in court Keane replies “Eddie Ryan stabbed me in the back”. When asked to identify him, Keane said he couldn’t see him in the court even though he sat only a few yards away. The Judge states “social chaos and anarchy” will consume the city if such ambivalence towards the law is maintained.

23 Aug 2002; Eddie Ryan’s nephew John McCarthy and his 9 year old son are fired on with an AK47 assault rifle by Keane associates Ross Cantillon and Roy Woodland. Woodland, who was only 19, had already lost his leg after being shot and on another occasion nearly died after being stabbed in the head.

29 Nov 2002; Head of security at Docs nightclub, Brian Fitzgerald, was shot dead on his way home from work. Fitzgerald had refused to allow members of one of the city’s gangs deal drugs on the premises. Earlier this year, James Martin Cahill, an English hit man was convicted of the murder. In fear of his life he recently turned super grass; his employers wait anxiously to learn if his testimony will be deemed admissible.

23 Jan 2003; Eddie Jnr and Kieran, the sons of Eddie Ryan are abducted at gunpoint. A third man, Christopher “Smokey” Costelloe manages to escape. A huge Garda search is undertaken amidst frenzied media coverage.

29 Jan 2003; Kieran Keane is murdered and his nephew Owen Treacy left for dead in Drombana Co. Limerick. The gun used to shoot Keane execution style jams as David “Frog-eye” Stanners goes to shoot Treacy. He is stabbed 17 times and has his throat slashed. After his miraculous recovery he turns state witness, his testimony leading to the murder sentences imposed on Stanners, Dessie Dundon, Anthony “Noddy” McCarthy, James McCarthy and Christopher “Smokey” Costelloe. Hours later, the Ryan brothers arrive unharmed into a midlands Garda station. Following the incidents the Garda Emergency Response Unit descend on the city with round the clock armed patrols and checkpoints.

Mar 2003; The Central Criminal Court is forced to leave Dublin for the first time. Limerick Detectives and police are missing too much time at work travelling to Dublin for murder trials. There have been 25 murders in Limerick in the past 2 years.

May 2003; A pitched battle between members of the Ryan and Keane family occurs outside Supermacs on the Ennis Road on a Sunday afternoon. 6 men, 3 from each side, are later imprisoned.

July 2003; John Ryan, brother of Eddie, is murdered while building a patio in Thomondgate. The two suspects for the murder are aged 15 and 16. That night members of the Keanes rang the Ryan’s to inform them their celebration was underway. One side popped champagne while the other mourned.

20 Oct 2003; 23 year old Michael Campbell McNamara is found murdered near his Southill home. He had been tortured before he was killed. A Keane associate, his killers tried to get him to lure 2 members of the Collopy family, now running the Keane Empire with Christy incarcerated and Kieran killed, to their deaths.

0ctober 28 2005; David Nunan from Southill is found murdered in Parteen Co. Clare. He had 50 previous convictions at the time of his death and had just been released from Limerick prison. He was a known drug dealer. This is the Limerick areas first murder in 15 months.

8 Nov 2005; 18 year old Darren Coughlan is kicked to death on the old Cratloe Road near his Moyross home. While Coughlan himself was not involved in gang activity his cousin David Stanners pulled the trigger that killed Kieran Keane. Limerick gangs have been known to look for soft targets. In May 2001 Owen Treacy’s father Daniel, a baker, had 2 petrol bombs thrown through the front window of his house. He suffered serious burns.

Keane Family.

Christy Keane; The undisputed Godfather of crime in Limerick until his incarceration in 2002. Currently serving 10 years his brother Kieran has been murdered while he has been in jail. Local police don’t believe he has the will or the firepower to go up against the McCarthy /Dundon family upon his release. Despite links to arms, racketeering, prostitution, money laundering and stolen vehicle trades the Keanes are seen as the lesser of 2 evils in Limerick. The city was largely peaceful until their authority was challenged. They also loaned money at almost zero interest and bought many council tenants in their St.Mary’s Park strongholds houses in an attempt to clean their money.

Kieran Keane; Christy’s younger brother assumed control of the family following his brothers incarceration. He was believed to have been behind the murder of Eddie Ryan before his death in 2003.

Liam Keane; Christy’s son was infamously photographed giving two fingers to the national media following his acquittal for the murder of Eric Leamy. He is said to harbour ambitions of running family business but other associates don’t like his attention attracting ways.

Owen Treacy; Hated amongst rival families for his testimony in his uncle Kieran’s murder trial. Refused to go into witness protection believing he was safer in his St.Mary’s Park stronghold. Retains round the clock police protection and escorts. Drives a top of the line BMW with impunity from CAB as reward for his co-operation in his uncle’s murder trial.

Brian Collopy; Reputed to have taken over as number 1 in the Keane organisation after Kierans death. Recently had a 250,000 euro property seized by CAB in Fedamore Co. Limerick. Collopy and his brothers Kieran and Philip were believed to have been targets when both Kieran Keane and Michael Campbell McNamara were murdered. Rumours abound of a split between Collopy and Christy Keane. It was a dispute between Collopy’s father Jack and the Ryan’s which sparked the cities infamous feud as the Keanes supported the Collopy’s.

Ryan Family

Eddie Ryan; Murdered in 2000, Eddie had attempted to kill Christy Keane a week earlier only to be foiled by a faulty gun. Ryan is alleged to have been the Keanes enforcer and a hit man for hire around the country. He had strong Republican links and was genuinely feared throughout Limerick. Believed to have been one of the shooters during the New Years Eve massacre of 1993 when two men entered a caravan in the midst of a wake for “Pa” McCarthy and opened fire killing 2 and wounding others. Christy Keane was later tried and found innocent of the murder of McCarthy, the witnesses evidence was deemed unreliable. The Ryan’s never had the strength of the Keanes and have been totally decimated by the feud.

John Ryan; Eddie’s brother John had no direct involvement but was the family’s senior figure following his brothers murder. His house in the Keane stronghold of Lee Estate was shot at and petrol bombed over 40 times in a 1 year period before his death.

Eddie Jnr and Kieran Ryan; Famously involved in an “alleged” kidnapping which now seems to have been a ruse to lure Kieran Keane to a meeting where he would be killed. Eddie Jnr was acquitted for stabbing Liam Keane when Keane would not identify him in court.

David “Frog Eyes” Stanners and James McCarthy; Ryan associates convicted of the murder of Kieran Keane. Stanners is believed to have pulled the trigger.

McCarthy/Dundon gang; Based in Ballinacurra Weston on the Southside of the city, the Dundons grew up largely in England before returning to Ireland in the early part of this century. Married into McCarthy’s and another feared settled traveller family from Southill, the Dundon’s have taken over the city since the murder of Kieran Keane. Extremely violent, their strength is unmatched. Believed to have been behind the murder of Brian Fitzgerald and Campbell McNamara.

An unidentifiable member of the Dundon Family is said to control operations. It is rumoured he is the Limerick man recently arrested in London reported to be the “Mr.Big” for drug trafficking into Limerick and the West of Ireland. Garda sources in Limerick though have previously identified him as no.3 in the smuggling operation behind “Chaser” O’Brien and a Kilrush based “businessman”.

Dessie Dundon; Currently imprisoned for the murder of Kieran Keane.

Ger Dundon; Serving 3 years for drug dealing, he was just 15 when caught with 30,000 euro worth of cocaine and ecstacy, and threatening the life of Owen Treacy.

John Dundon; Also serving prison time for death threats to Treacy. Previously jailed in England for assaulting and intimidating prison officers.

Wayne Dundon; Sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for threatening to kill a barman who wouldn’t serve his 14 year old sister, the barman was shot later that night. He assaulted 2 Gardai who arrested him, breaking one of their noses and the others jaw. The bar was burned down days later and the owners placed under police protection. Wayne famously mooned a judge during a court appearance telling him “that’s what the Dundon’s think of this court”.

Kenneth Dundon; Awaiting extradition to England for a murder in Hackney, London in 2003. He briefly made Scotland Yard’s most wanted list.

Anthony “Noddy” McCarthy; Serving time for the murder of Kieran Keane Famously turned to the Keane hordes and said “For every action there’s a reaction” while being led into custody following his conviction. He and Dessie Dundon are now being legally represented by Giovanni Di Stefano, Saddam Hussein’s lawyer. Nephew of Euro millions winner Dolores McNamara.

A family of settled travellers based in Southill are related to the Dundon’s by marriage. The gang are involved in an ongoing feud with the Kelly family, former city alderman Michael Kelly was murdered and his brother Anthony has had an estimated 66 shots fired at him in the past year. The settled traveller family are said to be behind up to 20 gang rapes in the Southill area, while police deny these claims a local GP has come forward anonymously to the Limerick press and claimed to have treated the victims, the family are believed to be supplied with drugs by the Dundon’s.

TWO brothers were yesterday jailed for a combined total of 10 years after an incident in which a six-year-old girl was hit with shotgun pellets.

In Limerick Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Carroll Moran jailed Christopher Curtin (39) for seven years, while his brother, Paul (28) was jailed for three years.

On May 31 last, Christopher, armed with a Spanish-made 12-gage Lamber semi-automatic shotgun, opened fire on a car whose occupants were members of the notorious McCarthy-Dundon gang at Yeat's Avenue, Kincora Park, Limerick.

He fired two gunshots at the grey Audi, blowing off one of the wing mirrors. Fragments from the shotgun blast struck a six-year-old girl in the ankle. Judge Moran said the child, who was playing in her front garden, was "very lucky not to have been seriously injured". A passing car was also struck.

The attack took place in broad daylight in a residential neighbourhood at 3pm, moments after windows at the home of the brothers' father, Michael Curtin, were broken by members of the McCarthy-Dundon gang.

The brothers' uncle, Eric Curtin (45) who drove the gunman to the scene of the shooting in a white Mazda, avoided jail after he received a five-year suspended sentence.

The three relatives all pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of a 12-gage Lamber semi-automatic shotgun on the date of the offence.

Both Christopher, of Salvia Court, Southill, Limerick, and Paul Curtin, who is living at Rearcross, Co Tipperary, also pleaded guilty to possession of eleven rounds of ammunition for the weapon on the same date.

Judge Moran said the incident was related to a feud which has resulted in a number of serious incidents in which firearms have been used.

Violent

Christopher Curtin contended that he pressured his brother and uncle to get involved in the incident.

Gda Paraig O'Dwyer previously told the judge that, "Christopher Curtin is a violent individual who operates an organised crime gang in Limerick city".

The judge said he accepted that Christopher did not intend to hit the young girl, but added that innocent bystanders can be shot when guns were discharged in public neighbourhoods.

Christopher's seven-year sentence was backdated to June 4 last.

Paul Curtin received a five-year sentence with two years suspended, which will begin on August 12 next when he completes a 12-month sentence for another offence.

A TEENAGER who was convicted in relation to an horrific arson attack on two young children in Moyross was this Thursday jailed for 14 months and banned from driving for 10 years.
Robert Sheehan, 18, of Pineview Gardens, Moyross, pleaded guilty at Limerick Court to what Judge Tom O'Donnell described as a "litany of appalling charges", which included dangerous driving, possession of a knife and trespassing.

In October 2007, Mr Sheehan was sentenced to two years detention after he pleaded guilty to recklessly endangering Gavin and Millie Murray at Pineview Gardens, Moyross, in September 2006.

This Thursday, Insp Seamus Gallagher, Henry Street, outlined details of the most recent offences, which occurred on dates between April 2008 and this January.

In total, Mr Sheehan pleaded guilty to more than 20 charges relating to nine incidents – all of which occurred in Moyross.

The most serious incident happened on August 4, 2008, when Mr Sheehan was observed by gardai driving a car at the junction of Cosgrave Park and Link Road, Moyross.

"When he noticed the gardai he took off at speed around the patrol car and mounted a footpath," said Insp Gallagher.

Judge O'Donnell was told that, during the subsequent chase, Mr Sheehan also drove across a green area where there were children playing, before crashing into the side wall of a house at Cliona Park.
Another offence related to a "ferocious physical fight" outside Casey's shop at Delmege Park.

Insp Gallagher said the incident was recorded on CCTV, and that Mr Sheehan was found carrying a knife in suspicious circumstances a short time later.

On two other occasions the defendant was observed driving a motorbike and a scrambler in Moyross while disqualified from driving. He did not have a driving licence or insurance.

Solicitor John Devane said his client, who has 48 previous convictions, had been influenced by his siblings growing up and that one of his older brothers was currently serving a lengthy jail sentence.

"Unfortunately, he fell into the ways of his siblings," he told the court.

Mr Devane added that Mr Sheehan's parents were separated, and he urged to judge to be as lenient as he could given the age of his client.
Imposing sentence, the judge said Mr Sheehan had an "appalling record", and that he was "absolutely and utterly out of control".

He imposed jail sentences totalling 14 months and he disqualified Mr Sheehan from driving for 10 years.

"In my view this young man should not drive at all until he gets a certificate of competency to show he can drive in a proper manner," he said.

The man sustained gunshot wounds to his back when a number of shots were fired at the downstairs of a house in the Raheen Square area of Ballinacurra Weston.

The incident happened at around 4am and according to gardai none of the other occupants of the house were injured in the shooting.

It is understood the culprit -a lone gunman- escaped the scene on foot following the shooting.

The scene of this morning's shooting has been preserved for technical analysis and Gardai at Roxboro are investigating the incident.

A FOURTEEN-year-old boy from the Ballinacurra Weston area of the city is due to be sentenced in May after he pleaded guilty to his role in the petrol bombing of a nightclub in Newcastle West last October.
A number of staff were in the Fireworks nightclub on South Quay at the time of the incident but no-one was injured when, according to gardai, a small fire broke out and a number of windows were smashed. The incident took place in the early hours of October 5.

At Limerick Circuit Court the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to a charge of arson and to the unlawful use of a stolen car on the night of the incident.

According to the indictment the charges relate to damage caused to glass windows, flooring and clothing at the nightclub. Previously at Newcastlewest District Court, Judge Mary O'Halloran refused

jurisdiction in the case prompting the Director of Public Prosecutions to deal with the accused before Limerick Circuit Court.

After accepting the teenager's guilty plea on Friday, Judge Carroll Moran remanded him in custody until May 8, next when he will impose sentence. As the accused is aged under 18 a report from the Probation and Welfare services must be considered by the court before sentence is imposed.

Separately the judge also adjourned the case of a second man who is also charged in connection with the same incident. That defendant, who has not yet entered a plea, is due to appear before Limerick Circuit Court on May 5.

Gardaí have today made 14 arrests, ranging in ages from late teens to early 40's, in connection with the murder of Shane Geoghegan in Limerick last year.

A garda spokeswoman said six men and six women were arrested on the south side of Limerick city this morning. They are currently being held at garda stations in the Limerick area and at Ennis, Co Clare.

A seventh woman was later arrested in Dublin and is being detained at Ballymun Garda Station while the seventh man was arrested in the Bansha area of Tipperary and is being held at Cahir Garda Station.

The 14 are being held under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act and Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007.

Gardaí also recovered a small amount of drugs during the operation.

Mr Geoghegan (28) was shot dead on a Limerick housing estate in the early hours of November 9th by gunmen who mistook him for a gangland criminal they were sent to murder.

He was returning home from watching the Ireland-Canada rugby game at a friend's house in the Kilteragh estate, Dooradoyle, just after 1.30am when his killers struck.

The death of Mr Geoghegan caused widespread shock and led to a crackdown on criminal gangs based in Limerick.

THE DUBLIN-based hitman suspected of murdering rugby player Shane Geoghegan is still in garda custody with 13 other people.

The man, in his 20s, was arrested in Limerick yesterday after a major garda operation which also led to the arrest of six other men, and seven women. One of the women, also in her 20s, was arrested in Coolock, north Dublin.

The Dublin man arrested is well known to gardai in the capital and was an associate of Paddy Doyle, who himself worked as an enforcer for the south Dublin crime gang led by criminal 'Fat' Freddie Thompson. Paddy Doyle was murdered in Spain last year.

The arrested Dubliner is believed to have fired the shots that killed Geoghegan early on November 9 last, after a senior member of the McCarthy-Dundon crime gang wrongly identified the innocent rugby player as a rival gangster.

Both the Dubliner and the senior gang member fled the country after the killing, but the Dubliner returned home while the other man has remained in London, where he has a large number of family contacts. Friends and family members from Limerick visited him over Christmas.

Amsterdam

This senior figure has also travelled to Amsterdam, it is believed.

A second gang associate joined him in London in recent weeks, as gardai put major pressure on the gang's operations in Limerick. Both men are in their 20s and have numerous criminal convictions.

He was one of 14 people being interviewed yesterday. Those arrested are being held at garda stations across Limerick, Clare, Tipperary and Dublin. Some of those arrested are being interviewed on suspicion of withholding information. They are aged from their late teens to their 40s.

The operation was meticulously planned by more than 70 gardai, including armed officers, the Regional Support Unit, members of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and organised crime units.

Twelve were arrested in Limerick city, with one woman picked up in the Coolock area of Dublin and another man in the Bansha area of Tipperary.

Geoghegan was shot dead by members of the McCarthy-Dundon gang who mistook him for a rival member of the Collopy gang.

The Garryowen rugby player ran for his life, but was gunned down near his home in Kilteragh, Dooradoyle.

In total, 16 people have now been arrested as investigations continue into the Geoghegan murder. Previously, two men were arrested in Limerick and in Clondalkin, Dublin on January 29 last.

Follow up searches have continued in the Weston, Watergate Flats and Thomondgate areas of Limerick city. Heroin and drugs paraphernalia were also recovered in Tipperary.

KATHRYN HAYES

A WELL-KNOWN Limerick criminal has been jailed for his part in a fight at one the country’s busiest accident and emergency departments.

Ger Dundon (21), who has 82 previous convictions, was arrested by gardaí in the early hours of September 8th last year following an incident at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

Dundon, Hyde Road, Ballinacurra Weston, pleaded guilty at Limerick District Court yesterday to engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour at the hospital contrary to section 6 of the Public Order Act.

The court heard that gardaí were called to the hospital to deal with a fight that had broken out between a group of men in the A&E area of the hospital.

When they arrived, they found Dundon standing over a man who was lying on the floor with a cut to his eye.

Insp Séamus Gallagher said the Dundon was not wearing a shirt and was being restrained by another man, when gardaí arrived at the hospital at 12.30am.

According to Garda evidence, Dundon tried to gain access to the triage area of the AE after the injured man was admitted.

Insp Gallagher said Dundon was very abusive to hospital staff and gardaí.

Mahon Corkery, instructed by Madden and Finucane solicitors from Belfast, represented Dundon, who had been assigned free legal aid. Mr Corkery described the offences as “silly and regrettable” and said his client, who is currently serving a nine-month sentence for a theft conviction, was very apologetic.

Judge Tom O’Donnell described Dundon’s behaviour at the hospital as “appalling”.

Imposing a two-month jail sentence, Judge O’Donnell said: “I would have thought that life at the accident and emergency department of Limerick Regional Hospital was difficult enough without Mr Dundon behaving in this appalling manner.”

The judge also imposed a two-month jail sentence on Dundon in relation to another public order offence, which happened at Hyde Road Limerick last year.

That incident, the court heard, happened on October 30th.

Insp Gallagher said Dundon was arrested by gardaí after he was found in a “highly abusive state”.

Judge O’Donnell ordered that both sentences run concurrently.

Under Siege

SENIOR Gardai knew that they were doing something right when they heard violent Limerick gangster Jimmy Collins beg them to “reign in” their officers.

In an incredible tongue-incheek outburst this thug is now blaming the police for all the problems in the city which was almost brought to its knees by the most savage criminal gang in the country – the McCarthy/Dundons.

But instead Collins’ outburst provided the clearest indication yet that the police are beginning to win the war against the murder gangs.

And that is something the majority of genuinely law-abiding citizens in Limerick will also be happy with.

They are delighted that at long last the good guys are making life miserable for the bad boys.

Brutal thug Collins – a member of the wider McCarthy/Dundon clan who survived an attempt on his own life by the Keane/Collopy mob last year – has recently been whining that he and his “peace making” cronies are being “harassed” by a specialist squad of tough young cops from Dublin.
Miserable

Jimmy Collins

Jimmy Collins

THUG: Jimmy Collins videoing the Gardai;
He has complained the “in your face” tactics used by the officers from the Gardai’s National Support Services is very upsetting to the most pernicious drug gang in the country.

Jimmy and his low-life pals, who have terrorised an entire city for almost a decade, claim that they have made a peace deal with their rivals.

The mobsters are complaining the heavily armed squad has been stopping and searching their thugs on the streets – which in reality is very bad for their trade in drugs, intimidation, and murder.

In a recent newspaper interview they even demanded that Commissioner Fachtna Murphy specifically withdraws the Dublin guards who have been making their lives a misery.

But senior Gardai and local sources in Limerick say the only reason the McCarthy/Dundons have been claiming peace is because of the public’s outrage over the brutal murder of innocent rugby player Shane Geoghegan last November.

However, despite their peace claims and the police pressure the McCarthy/Dundons are suspected of carrying out at least three recent gun attacks in the city.

Brothers Darren and Joe Hehir – former associates of the McCarthy/Dundons – were both shot and injured in separate incidents.

In one case the suspected gun man – whose identity is known to the Sunday World – is a 15-year-old kid who is one of the people complaining about Garda harassment.

Sources believe if it was not for the continuous police presence then a number of people would have been murdered in recent months.

The horrific murder of Shane Geoghegan was the final straw for many. The murder led to the establishment of the Regional Support Unit, a specialist weapons and tactics squad.

At the same time Operation Weston was set up on the orders of the regional garda commander, Assistant Commissioner Kevin Ludlow, to target and harass Collins and the rest of the McCarthy/Dundons.

The hand-picked Dublin detectives have been making life very difficult for the mob – as our series of exclusive pictures reveal today.

Wearing bullet-proof vests and armed with Sig automatic pistols these officers have been ordered by their chiefs to “get in the faces” of the thugs who dominate life in the Ballincurra Weston area of the city.

“The only language these cowardly scumbags understand is the in-your-face approach from the cops and the ordinary decent people of this city are delighted with the job the guards are doing,” a local source said.

A Sunday World undercover team recently watched as officers from Operation Weston and the Regional Support Unit went after the mobs.

Our team even photographed “peace maker” Jimmy Collins as he tried to video the squad members in an attempt to later identify them for possible intimidation.

Our pictures show members of the squad searching 22-year-old thug Patrick Dowling on the side of the street. Dowling, a foot soldier for the McCarthy/Dundons, was only recently released from prison after serving three years and nine months of a five-year stretch for possessing a Mac 10 machinegun and 150 rounds of ammunition.

He was 18 at the time of his arrest. Since his release the undercover squad arrested him for possession of heroin and a file is currently being prepared for the DPP.

Also in our pictures are nasty thugs, Christy McCarthy and Jimmy Collins’s son Gareth.

McCarthy (26) was arrested last week and questioned about the Geoghegan murder. In 2006, he was jailed for two years after Gardai found 9mm bullets in his possession.

'CHAT': Annabel Dundon, sister of Wayne, being stopped by cops in Limerick
In another incident we watched as cops pulled in Annabel Dundon, the younger sister of John, Gerard and Wayne Dundon – the most feared criminals in Limerick – for a “chat”.

Said a senior Garda source: “This approach is the only one these people understand. The constant threat of being stopped and searched means that it is very risky for them to try and move guns or drugs around the city. So far it is working.”

The Sunday World has learned that Commissioner Murphy is determined the undercover squads and the RSU will remain on high alert in Limerick for the foreseeable future.

Gardi sieze armoured BMW's from Limerick Gang

ONOR LALLY, Crime Correspondent

THE CRIMINAL Assets Bureau (Cab) has seized two bullet-proof BMW cars from members of one of Limerick’s feuding gangs. The vehicles, a BMW X5 4X4 and a BMW 3 Series car, were registered to brothers Ger and Wayne Dundon.

Gardaí believe the cars were imported from Germany some time at the end of 2007. They appeared on the streets of Limerick in early 2008 and were confiscated by Cab in April 2008.

Yesterday in the High Court Mr Justice Kevin Feeney granted Cab a Section 3 order under the Proceeds of Crime Act, which effectively confirms the vehicles are the proceeds of crime. The order, which clears the way for the disposal of the vehicles, was granted to the head of Cab, Det Chief Supt John O’Mahoney, and bureau chief legal officer Frank Cassidy.

The vehicles were ordered by the Dundon brothers from Germany, where both were modified to the brothers’ specifications.

The vehicles are worth about €150,000 and have bullet-proof glass and reinforced armoured doors. They were seized as part of Operation Platinum, under which Cab has now seized five vehicles in Limerick.

The bureau also seized a Mitsubishi Shogun 4X4 worth €50,000 in January. Last month Cab sold a Toyota Landcruiser and a Toyota Avensis worth an estimated €60,000 and €90,000 respectively from a rival Limerick criminal gang.

They were owned by Limerick gang member Phillip Collopy and his Cork-born associate Brian Scanlon. Both men belong to a crime gang once led by murdered drug dealer Kieran Keane. Currently five members of the McCarthy-Dundon gang are in prison serving life for Keane’s murder.

Cab officers in Limerick and Dublin are continuing to analyse seized documents to identify more of the gangs’ assets.
