Yakuza boss arrested for making underage girls work at street fairs
The leader of a gang affiliated with the Inagawa-kai crime syndicate and three other people have been arrested on suspicion of making underage junior high school girls work in stalls at street fairs, police said.
Police arrested the four, including the 46-year-old gang leader, Hideaki Aoyama, on suspicion of violating the Labor Standards Law. Aoyama reportedly told police he didn't know the girls were underage, but his accomplices have told police that they thought anyone would be OK because they lacked workers.
Investigators said that between July and August this year, Aoyama and the other suspects made three junior high school students aged between 13 and 15 work in food stalls during street fairs in Tokyo's Ota-ku and in Kawasaki.
The stalls reportedly brought in about 100,000 yen in takings a day, and the girls were reportedly paid a daily wage of 8,000 yen.
The girls worked as sellers at the stalls after being approached by seniors, investigators said. Police said they were continuing to investigate the suspects over the possibility that they employed other minors.
