Yakuza gunned down in Tokyo shooting

Investigators examine the scene of the shooting in Tokyo's Adachi-ku on Wednesday morning.

A gang member died from gunshot and stab wounds, after residents reported a shooting on a street in Tokyo's Adachi-ku on Wednesday, police said.

Killed was 38-year-old Yasuaki Okada, a member of a gang associated with the Matsuba-kai yakuza organization.

Police said Okada was found collapsed at the scene, dressed in his pajamas and bleeding from the chest, following an emergency call at about 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday. He died about an hour later.

Investigators said he had one bullet wound and two stab wounds. At least one bullet and cartridge were found on the road nearby. Immediately after the gunshots, residents reported seeing two people leaving the scene in a white vehicle.

A local resident described the shooting.

"I heard a man shouting on a cell phone and when I went to look I heard three gunshots," a woman in the neighborhood said. "The man was collapsed and there were two or three people talking to him, saying, 'Are you all right?'"

Police said the shooting occurred in a residential area of Adachi-ku, about 50 meters north of an elementary school.

2 yakuza admit to fatally shooting another gang member
Two yakuza members arrested for the illegal possession of a gun after turning themselves in to a Tokyo police station have admitted that they fatally shot another gang member, police said.

Akira Okada, 43, and Tsuyoshi Watanabe, 38, both members of an affiliate of the Matsuba-kai crime syndicate, are accused of violating the Firearms and Swords Control Law.

Yasuaki Okada, 38, a senior member of another Matsuba-kai affiliate, was shot to death on a street in Adachi-ku, Tokyo, in the predawn hours of Wednesday, local police said.

The two suspects were arrested after they turned themselves in to a police station in Tokyo on Wednesday evening, accompanied by a high-ranking member of another yakuza group. They handed over an unloaded gun to officers.
