I don't think I have the energy to type how dumb I think that mosque issue is. It's just a damn distraction (yet another one) away from important issues!

Fantome - August 20, 2010 09:38 PM (GMT)
Anything that has something to do with fear mongering automatically goes on my shit list. But still, I have to wonder why there of all places?

Scarlet Witch - August 20, 2010 09:42 PM (GMT)
Probably for the same reason why a "gentlemen's club" is in the same area. People living there will attend.

_Captain_Marvel_ - August 21, 2010 12:35 AM (GMT)
All I have to say is that I'm disappointed in the way these people are acting . They portray Americans in a negative light and should be ashamed of their behavior . We live in America where people are supposed to be able to practice their religion freely and without fear of oppression, even religions we don't like or agree with; the people who try to deny that right to others are as bad as the Islamic Fascists that they are so afraid of .

Since this post was serious which is out of character for me here is a picture of Kurt Angle in a cowboy hat to balance things out .

Article from Cracked

Even the writers over at Cracked know this argument is bullshit.

Ceielo - August 21, 2010 09:04 PM (GMT)
They wanted to argue that making a mosque there would be against respecting those who died there. That to me is one of the dumbest reasons to keep it out. I am actually FOR the mosque. Most of my family are against it though because of who took out the WTC.

Scarlet Witch - August 21, 2010 09:30 PM (GMT)
People need to realize there are extremists in every religion. Those are the ones that cause the problems. Muslims didn't cause 9-11, terrorists did. They just share the same religion. They aren't gonna bring back the ones that died or even make this whole thing go away by discriminating.

Ice_Tyrant - August 23, 2010 12:31 AM (GMT)
Since a lot of Christians killed Americans in the Civil War, I think it is sacrilegious to build any sort of Christian Church in this county. I find it offensive to those that were killed.

Because they own the building?

odanobunaga - August 23, 2010 02:23 AM (GMT)
Oh and for my opinion:

Since no one has built anything actually on Ground Zero, I say build it on Ground Zero. These are moderate muslims who are hated by the extremists and they are trying to show that Islam is NOT a religion of hate yet christians are showing that they are no different than Al Qaeda. Sorry but I say let these good people do whatever they want. Hell even Dubya LOOKED for these people to show that America is not trying to fight muslims yet stupid racist rednecks and christians are coming up with stupid reasons to block the construction.

Well it was fun while it lasted .

HombreSabio - August 30, 2010 09:33 PM (GMT)
Well, I guess everyone has said what they're going to say, so I'll get to it now.

QUOTE (Fantome @ Aug 20 2010, 04:38 PM)
Anything that has something to do with fear mongering automatically goes on my shit list. But still, I have to wonder why there of all places?

Because it's currently an abandoned Burlington Coat Factory building. So they've got an empty building, in the heart of a city that they feel they can put to good use.

Let's clarify a few things about this.

1) It's not a Mosque. It's a community center open to the public. It will include a gymnasium, a swimming pool, a basketball court and it just so happens to also house a Mosque somewhere inside the building. However, as the Cracked writer put it:

"Yes there will be a prayer space inside it as well, but you don’t call St. Mary’s Hospital a church because it happens to have a chapel inside it, do you?"

2) It's not actually at Ground Zero. It's 2 blocks away. And there is a Mosque 4 blocks away from Ground Zero currently. So, anyone wondering why they can't build this Community Center farther away apparently only wants them to move 2 more blocks?

QUOTE (Scarlet Witch)
Probably for the same reason why a "gentlemen's club" is in the same area. People living there will attend.

Bingo. With both a strip club and a Hooters in the area, people claiming the area is "hallowed ground" are obviously full of shit. Though, I might be in the camp that considers boobs to be "works of God"....

QUOTE (Captain_Marvel)

Win. These people are hypocrites. These are the same people that hold rallies claiming the government is taking away their rights and over-stepping their bounds, but they're trying to persecute and remove the very first right guaranteed by the Constitution to these people for bullshit reasons.

QUOTE (Ceielo)

Tell your family
Muslims =/= terrorists.

Exactly. Muslims as a whole are no more to blame for 9-11 than Christians as a whole are to blame for the bombing of abortion clinics.
It'd be like looking at Westboro Baptists and assuming that's how all people who believe in the Bible act. They're just the fringe crazies.

QUOTE (Ice_Tyrant)
Since a lot of Christians killed Americans in the Civil War, I think it is sacrilegious to build any sort of Christian Church in this county. I find it offensive to those that were killed.

Since a lot of Americans died at the hands of the British in the Revolutionary War, I think it's insensitive to speak with a British accent in America.

Aside from the incorrect inference that the Community Center is being built on Ground Zero (as pointed out previously, it's 2 blocks away), I agree with this.

QUOTE (Saiyu)
Except, ya know, for that whole Freedom Tower thing

I knew they were planning that, but I actually wasn't even aware that construction had started on it. I thought they were still just digging, since earlier this year they dug up an old wooden ship at the site.

QUOTE (odanobunaga)

And now you've lost me again.

Scarlet Witch - August 30, 2010 09:45 PM (GMT)
It would not surprise me at all if the followers of the Westboro Baptist Church killed a bunch of people. Even the looks on their faces show that no one is home upstairs.

Your post can be read 2 ways. And unlike most circumstances, no amount of punctuation can alleviate the confusion in reading that statement.

Either way:
1) It's not on Ground Zero
2) I don't think anything aside from the proposed "Freedom Tower" (which is a stupid name) structure should be built on Ground Zero

How long until the rapture idiots decide its related the supposed new world order?

Ceielo - August 31, 2010 02:43 AM (GMT)
They should just name it World Trade Center which it was before it was attacked. But is it one big tower instead of two now?

Scarlet Witch - August 31, 2010 03:33 AM (GMT)
I'm pretty sure it's only one tower.

Olbermann can sometimes be a little too annoyingly left for me, but he really nailed all the major points on this one.

It's really a shame that the talking heads over at Fox News and their mindless followers have created such a scandal around this.

Yeah I definitely know what you mean, and even in this video there were a places where I felt he got a little carried away (you can only make so many comparisons to The Holocaust and the current situation in New York before it starts to become a little redundant). MSNBC can be a little hard to stomach at times, but I thought this was pretty well done overall

Since it's been pretty quiet, I guess that dipshit down in Florida decided not to burn the Korans. At least, so far, I haven't heard anything about last night. It was supposed to be planned for between 6 - 9pm.

Well, at least he has some sense, for whatever reason he didn't do it. A few days ago, I could picture him doing it and then not manning up to the consequences.

Cloud3514 - September 13, 2010 04:05 AM (GMT)
If I remember correctly, the only reason he canceled was because there's a rumor that the building of the community center is going to be canceled. And to that I say: Fuck you stupid Americans. The terrorists have won if these idiots decide to bitch and moan about how it is "insensitive" because a group of terrorists have Islamic beliefs. They win because if mainstream Muslims can't practice their religious freedom, they prove the terrorists right.

So fuck you idiots of America.

Well, yeah, but in the case of this Muslim community center, its mostly just the American morons making a big deal out nothing.

It'll also piss off intelligent, level headed people.

As far as I'm concerned, the only thing that should rightfully be built there is a tribute to all the people who died in 9/11.

Ice_Tyrant - September 15, 2010 04:47 AM (GMT)
I take back what I said earlier, buildin' a mosque on ground zero would just be stupid. If anything it seems more like an "obvious troll is obvious" kinda idea.

The people against the mosque are like Internet trolls. Probably best to just ignore them.

Bingo.

That's easy enough to do when the troll is just a random asshole on the internet, but when the troll is Fox News and they're setting not just the line of discourse, but an entire agenda (successfully, mind you), then sitting around ignoring what they're doing is probably the worst thing you can do.

Just as Olbermann cited this quote from Pastor Martin Niemöller, I'll repost it.

QUOTE
First, they came for the Jews. But I was not a Jew, so I did not speak up.

Then they came for the communists.
But I was not a communist, so I did not speak up.

Then they came for the trade unionists.
But I was not a trade unionist, so I did not speak up.

And when they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out for me.

You've got a large sect of our society trying to take away the rights of a specific group of people. And you've got a media organization encouraging them to do it under some idiotic guise of "preserving our America" at the expense of the basic rights guaranteed in the Constitution. That's not the kind of thing I think should be ignored.

In that vein, here's a video that actually makes me feel good. People actually standing up to the assholes who are instigating and being disrespectful to Muslims in America.

Skateboarder Stops Extremist from Burning Qur'an
