Title: Don Imus

Saiyu - April 12, 2007 09:21 PM (GMT)
By now, I'm sure you've heard the story, but for those who haven't, here's the deal: Radio talk-show host Don Imus, after the women's basketball championship last Tuesday night (the 3rd), that following Wednesday called some of the player's on the Rutger's team "nappy headed ho's." He said the comment was a joke, that no ill intent was behind it, and he has apologized numerous times, including on Rev. Al Sharpton's radio show. However, both MSNBC (who broadcasted his shows on their channel in the morning) and CBS (who hosted his radio show) have dropped him. Do you think the punishment is fair? (If I have left anything out, let me know, and I will edit.)

Dragon Darkness - April 12, 2007 10:25 PM (GMT)
Maybe there heads were nappy and perhaps they were hoes.

Groobmaster - April 12, 2007 11:29 PM (GMT)
I don't agree that they should have fired Imus. His comments might have been in hurtfull but not racialy motivative. He made a bad joke that is all. The old man was trying to use modern slang and it backed fired.

In today's society, anyone who says anything that could be considered racially touchy against black people gets crucified by the media.

I think that goes for any minority including gays.

I think there is a far stronger outcry when it is against blacks compared to gay but that is just my opinion.

But also take into account this wasn't the first time he's said something like this .

He's a shock-jock. That's what they do.

tvman099 - April 13, 2007 10:51 AM (GMT)
I think it's also worth mentioning that although what he said was somewhat offensive, it's no worse for black people than all the rap videos they play on BET 24/7 featuring black dudes decked out in gold chains and basketball jersies riding around in Cadillacs and visiting strip clubs full of "nappy headed hos".

The stereotypes that seem to get so many black people up in arms are the very ones that high profile black people reinforce constantly.

odanobunaga - April 13, 2007 01:21 PM (GMT)
I agree with TVman. I've been wondering why Imus was fired. Go to south central LA and there are nappy headed hoes calling each other nappy headed hoes. Maybe MSNBC and these white fucks need to get with the program. Hypocracy at its' best.

Groobmaster - April 13, 2007 01:44 PM (GMT)
From what I read it was pretty much the advertisers dollars that got him fired.

Plus, if he had said something about white girls or if this had been a black man who had said it, there would have been no where near the same amount of outcry. I just want to know one thing: Where's Sharpton or Jackson defending those Duke boys? Those guys apparently are innocent, but I don't see them jumping to defend their rights.

The hypocrisy in it is quite funny. Because, a while back Jesse Jackson got into some hot water for calling NY "heimytown" which is a derogative reference towards the jewish population. And now he's one of the ones throwing stones here.

And on the topic of rappers saying ho and whatnot, I believe it was Fox news that had some guy in charge of a hip-hop site saying why it was ok for rappers to use these terms, but wrong for Imus. I think that's a bunch of bullshit. If a word is okay for one group of people to say, it should be okay for everyone to say. If it's not okay for a certain group to say, it shouldn't be okay for anyone to say. Why in the hell are people trying to break up what language is ok based on the color of your skin?

As for Imus himself, he's gonna be fine. I have no doubt he's gonna be picked up by another radio station, more than likely on satellite. He's been in the business forever, and he's good at his job.

Spartan4Gondor - April 15, 2007 01:16 AM (GMT)
This is bullshit.

All he did was make a bad joke, and he gets fired, while rappers say things much much worse and sell millions of records. It seems the only people you can make fun of here in america, are people whiter then you are.

Let's sue CBS

I am 2/3 german and 1/3 english so I am not supposed to say shit. :(

Kitty - April 15, 2007 03:20 AM (GMT)
I'm just general mixture of various forms of white. Pretty much same boat.

tvman099 - April 15, 2007 08:26 AM (GMT)
I'm about as white as it gets, being English/Scottish/Irish, but I've never been one to shy away from using racially touchy language around people of other races who use it as well. I refuse to accept a world in which I have to censor my language because of my race.

Groobmaster - April 15, 2007 01:15 PM (GMT)
Political correctness suck donkey nuts. You pretty much can't say shit without offending someone somewhere.

I am offended by Oda and his sheer Odaness. The nerve.

Anyway, back to topic. I agree with people who find it hypocritical that if you are of a certain race you can use whatever language you want about that race, but how dare you say that if you are not that race! It is a bit rediculous. If you don't want people calling you those things, start fixing it at home!

Saiyu - April 17, 2007 08:02 PM (GMT)
I heard something before I left Friday about Rev. Sharpton taking on the rap community next. Right....

Kitty - April 18, 2007 05:08 AM (GMT)
I noticed this was on Oprah today.

Some things sure make the rounds.

If it was such a big damn deal, he should have been taking on the rap community long ago. I haven't heard a damn word about him crusading for all the rap artists to be dropped from their labels. <_<

He may be a hypocrite but he isn't a moron . If he took on the rap industry and demanded that rap not be played over national air waves he'd be effecting not only record lables but the companies behind the lables , The stores in which the albums are sold , the radio stations that play them , ect . Would you honestly want all of those people pissed off at you ?

PS: Sorry for all of the typos , i took a sleeping pill and it's kicking in right now .

He also wont take on the rap industry because most of the rappers are black. He is trying to protect black freedoms while destroying everyone elses.
