Title: Forum Lesson #1
Description: Don't Post In Spam Threads.
HombreSabio - October 8, 2006 12:06 AM (GMT)
Recently (Sept. 30th, 2006) there was a spam attack on the forums. Generally, not a big deal. If the mods aren't around to deal with it immediately, generally it isn't too terribly long before we are here to clean the place back up.
Now, it doesn't take someone too terribly smart to realize that the reason spammers spam is because of the reaction to it by the forum regulars. Generally speaking, when spam threads start popping up, the general populace of a forum turns into blathering idiots. Whether they end up joining in the spam, insulting the spammer, insulting eachother for either joining in the spam or insulting to spammer, the outcome is usually pretty ridiculous. And that is exactly the kind of reaction that the spammer is looking for. And I can't count the number of times this has been stressed not only here, but pretty much any forum you go to that has even 1 halfway intelligent person there.
Well, as I said, recently there was a spam attack. And, true to form, the threads were cleaned up not to long after it happened. Unfortunately, we missed one thread.
This thread. Now, the fact that we missed this thread wouldn't have been a big issue, if it could have just been ignored and reported. But,
SEVEN DAYS after the attack, the thread gets a reply to it. And it got several more.
Obviously, action was taken. Because I'm absolutely sick and tired of having to stress this without anyone actually listening, warnings were handed out. There is
NO and I mean
NO reason why anyone here should ever post in a spam thread.
And because this particular PM inspired me to make this guidance thread for the lot of you, take a look and I'll re-iterate just so there is absolutely no misunderstanding.

Once again, there is absolutely
NO reason for you to post in a spam thread. If you do, you're just adding to the problem. Ignore it, report it to a moderator and
DO NOT POST.
If there isn't a mod on, send a private message to the moderators so that they can take care of the thread immediately upon logging in. And
DO NOT POST in the thread.
In case you were too lazy to read all of that: If you post in a spam thread, you are adding to the problem and you will receive a warning. End of discussion.

Huh. So that was it. Sorry about that. Not really used to reporting. Won't happen again. Why is this a thread, though, and not just added to the rules?

To get people's attention, I'd say.

Kinda overkill, but whatever gets the job done I guess.

Well said. Could have been a little more polite, but good job.
Hombre is right. Listen to him. Always.

Actually, they were taken care of as it happened. Lucky timing I suppose.

"We" missed one thread? Sure, if you scanned through the forum checking for debris. That spam attack defensive was all me. *puffs out chest* :P
I'll take responsiblity for missing that thread. I don't like Anime, so I have no reason to go into that board, and I obviously didn't see the thread while looking over the front page. Apparently someone had posted after the thread was made, before I got a chance to refresh the forum index. Although, I did post in the 'Spammer' thread I think it was called and asked if I missed anything (for reassrance).

As punishment, you have to go to the trash forum, pick through all the porn spam threads, and file them according to penis size.

I'll assume that your reason for posting less was because things were "too strict."
If being expected not to encourage the idiots that spam and, and being expected not to act like an idiot yourself is "too strict" for anyone here, then I couldn't care less if they up and leave.

Posting what you did doesn't seem smart to me, but who am I to judge?
CrimsonSkull - October 8, 2006 05:43 AM (GMT)
People complain when there is a spam raid and spam topics all over the forum, but one gets missed and they start posting in it. Yeah pretty dumb.
Dragon Darkness - October 8, 2006 07:53 AM (GMT)
I just want to say that Hombre is a turkey. A turkey on wheat bread covered in a slice of swiss cheese. Also there is some mustard on top of him. Under him is a delicious dill pickle. Yummy. I hope that you all can learn something from this post and fight injustice in this world whenever you see it.

I'd be worried about where that dill pickle is going to end up. o_O

...Hombre your an asshole. Really. The spammer was already suspended for a year, it's not going to drastically effect the forum if someone posted in the spam thread. A mod will see that and delete it. We didn't need to be warned because of it.

Just because his account is suspended does not mean that he cannot view the forum and see the reaction.
| QUOTE |

Yes, you did need to be warned, because if nobody ever does anything about it, you guys will never learn. You'll just keep posting in spam threads, and adding to the problem. And if you're adding to the problem, then you're getting a warning.
Ascendancy - October 8, 2006 05:32 PM (GMT)
Who the hell says that is the case? Did we all agree and say "Hey let's just keep posting in spam threads just for the hell of it"? No. And just because you started this stupid little thread doesn't mean that it will stop anybody either.

If you're posting in spam threads, you're keeping it active. And if you're keeping spam active, then you're causing a problem.
| QUOTE |

Then I guess you'll just keep getting warned and eventually be suspended. ^_^

This thread is Forum Lesson #1.
Will there be more in the future?
Saiyu - October 8, 2006 10:00 PM (GMT)
tvman099 - October 9, 2006 09:26 AM (GMT)
Hombre is right, Ascendancy.
Posting in spam threads only encourages the spammers to spam some more.
Their "food" so to speak, is the reactions they get from the populace of whatever board they're raiding. Deprive them of the reactions they seek, and they'll lose interest more quickly than they would if you got into it with them.
If you simply act as though the threads don't exist by not posting in them, they'll fall to the bottom of the page and that will be the end of that.
odanobunaga - October 14, 2006 05:19 AM (GMT)
Hombre has my blessing to warn anyone who posts in spam threads. Simple as that. Spam=warning, posting in a spam thread=spam, therefore Posting in a spam thread=warning.
Thats easy to understand, I think.

It's the transitive property. :)
