Assessing the Damage

Robin's POV

Millions of questions raced through my mind as I stood on the roof of Titans Tower, watching in stoic silence as a chunk was being rebuilt following the hit it had sustained from Professor Chang's laser. Out of all of them, the most important, if not intriguining, was: who was the new Red X?

Up until my vault was broken into, I thought I had redeemed myself after I was thought to be a traitor by my friends. However, such a redemption had come with a price and now, some idiot was in possession of the suit I created to get closer to finding out about the madman known as Slade.

"Still thinking about what happened, Robin?"

About an hour later, I was brought out of my bewildered reverie by Raven's voice behind me. I turned to look at her and then turned away again with a sigh.

"How could I have allowed that guy to steal the suit?" I replied. "I had the vault sealed tighter than Fort Knox and the only ones who knew about it were myself, the team, and..." My masked eyes widened slightly. "...Slade."

I turned to Raven again. "You don't think Slade stole it, do you?"

"Robin, give it a rest already," said Raven. "For one thing, how could Slade have stolen it? He's been dead since Terra created that volcano. Besides, it probably wouldn't have fit him anyway." Sighing, she added, "Don't beat yourself up over this. I know you like to dwell on things, but you shouldn't let this new Red X worry you."

"I wish it were that simple," I said. "Like I told you before, whoever's in that suit now is my responsibility."

It was here that I noticed Raven coming closer to me and when she stopped walking, she grabbed my hand. I gave her a quizzical look, mainly due to the fact that she had never done that before.

"He doesn't have to be," she replied. "Don't forget, we've fought him too, so the responsibility is now directed toward the team."

"It also got you captured by Chang."

"Don't remind me," said Raven. "I doubt I'll be able to look at a fish stick the same way again after that experience."

"I'm sorry you went through all that hell," I said. "If I could erase everything that happened tonight, you know I'd do it in a heartbeat."

Now, it was Raven's turn to give a quizzical look. "Robin, please, you don't know what you're saying."

"I do know what I'm saying," I said. "I'm speaking from the heart here. You've got to at least indulge me on that."

"Robin, I..."

"Let me finish," I said. "Raven, I never meant for my past mistakes to come between us like this. Truth is, I've loved you since we met, but with all the crap that's come our way, tonight's little misadventure included, I've just...never gotten the opportunity to tell you how I feel about you."

Raven blinked, as though she never expected me to come out with a confession like that.

When I didn't hear anything out of her, I added, "Raven, please say something."

To which she replied, after finding her voice, "I...I never knew I meant that much to you. I always thought you loved Starfire."

"She did tell me she had a crush on me, which I was flattered to hear, but let me assure you, Raven, that she's just a friend," I said. "I already told you that I loved you since I met you, didn't I?"

"That's right, you did," said Raven. "Forgive me, I'm just...shocked that you confessed your true feelings for me."

"I know, it's a lot to take in at once," I said. "But, I meant every word."

"I know you did," said Raven. "You really did speak from the heart and I appreciate it. And you know something?"

I smiled at her, as though I knew what she was going to say next. "What?"

Raven returned my smile. "I love you too."

We then got closer and our lips met in a kiss that seemed to send shivers throughout both of our bodies at once. I felt a great calm wash over me as we continued to kiss and it was the best feeling I ever had in a long time.

After about five minutes or so, our lips parted and I looked into Raven's eyes, seeing the sparkle and radiance in the way they seemed to see past my own eyes and into my soul, examining every corner and leaving nothing undiscovered.

There was a brief pause until Raven spoke first.

"I always imagined what kissing you would be like."

To which I replied with a smile, "And now that you finally got the chance to experience it?"

Raven returned my smile. "It was breathtaking. You're an incredible kisser, Robin, more than you're willing to admit."

"You're an impressive kisser yourself, Dark Angel," I said. "I'm pleased to say that I'm fortunate enough to be the first guy to actually kiss you. You may not realize it, Raven, but you fascinate me."

My words seemed to hit home, because no sooner did I say them than I noticed Raven blushing. She obviously had never been told such things until now.

"Robin, that was the sweetest thing I've ever heard," she said. "So, do I really fascinate you?"

"More than anything else in this world," I said. "Believe me, it's a good thing, so don't be embarrassed."

Her only response to that was a kiss that was twice as passionate than the first. I practically melted against her lips and I never wanted the moment we were having to end.

As we kissed, I took no notice of the sun making its ascension. To me, it didn't matter what time it was, as long as Raven and I were together.
