Death of a great Frenchman!
Dominique Catherine de Pérignon, le marquis de Grenade, (b. 1754) died late last month on december 24th 1818. He made his military career during French Revolutionary Wars. In 1793-1795 he successfully commanded the Army of the Eastern Pyrenees and defeated the Spaniards at Escola and Roses. In 1796 he was appointed ambassador to Spain and comcluded the Treaty of San Idelfonso against Britain. He was then involved in a smuggling affair and compromised with a young woman spy. In 1798 Perignon was recalled and to the Italian Army. At the Battle of Novi he was wounded and captured. Perignon was made senator (1801), Marshal of France (1804) and count of the Empire by Napoleon. From 18 September 1806 to 23 July 1808 Count Perignon was the Governor-general of Parma, Piacenza, and Guastalla. Later named to Naples, Pérignon, recently ennobled, was a close acquaintance of the royal couple. He returned to France in 1814 and rallied to Louis XVIII, who named him marquis de Grenade. He is among the many great Frenchmen who have led adventurous professional careers! His memory will not be forgotten.

Treaty of Genoa Signed:
The Treaty of Genoa, between Catholic rebel leader, Charles Albert, and King Victor Emmanuel has been signed, the Catholic King is now in complete control of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
King Charles Makes Plea to Pope
Today, newly crawned King Charles Albert has plead with the Pope, Sicily, Tuscany, and France to stop the war on Sardinia. It is back in Catholic hands and should remain in Catholic Sardinian hands. War on Catholic Brothers is forbidden in the Roman Catholic Church, and this should be no exception. Do not make Sardinia pay for the unjust tyrant's wrong doings.

A king has died
It has been officially anounced yesterday that Louis XVIII, the King of France, has passed away. The cause of death was a pneumonia. The King lived to the age of 65. A week of mourning has been declared throughout France.
His reign lasted only 6 years. He was the second son of Louis of Bourbon, duke of Bourbon. His eldest brother reigned as Louis XVI only to be killed in the Revolution. Now his younger brother Charles, the count of Artois, will accept the title of King since he is the rightful heir according to salic law.
The reign of Louis XVIII was characterized by the Hundred Days when Napoleon I escaped the island of Elba to reclaim his title of emperor but ended goign back into exile. Then, his nephew Louis-Antoine the duke of Angouleme and his niece Marie-Therese, princess of France, were murdered by anti-royalists on the wedding day of their only daughter. He then suppressed an anti-royalist revolt in the South and sent the army to kill anyone suspected of being an anti-royalist in South-Eastern France to teach a lesson. He also passed quite a few ultra-royalist laws in parliament centralizing further the king's role in French politics. He also brought long awaited peace between the United Kingdom and France by marrying an English princess.
The Count of Artois will soon be crowned as Charles X, King of France once the week of mourning is ended. His wife, Maria Isabel of Braganca, will be crowned as Queen of France: the first Portuguese Queen France has ever had. His two daughters will also be titled the princesses of France. Many wonder what will characterize the reign of Charles X, who is 63 years of age.
