Kingston Pen is closing. No surprise there, it's Canada's Alcatraz. Our oldest prison. It can now have a second life as a tourist attraction. Lets see if thats what becomes of it.

Meanwhile, something will have to replace it, and the Feds have said they will be building new prisons. Personally I believe we have a great central location, with an airport. Kingston Pen had 400 employees, not to mention the spin off jobs it would have created in the community.

That is a great idea. I recal Fred Mann telling me about a boys camp (kiddie jail) that was up 108 a ways back in the day, way back in the day...he was a guard or something.

Lots of land up there to build it on, would definitely stimulate the economy and hey some of the local residents wouldn't have to go so far to visit their friends and families anymore LOL

Apparently they are adding on to current facilities to house the KP inmates......there are a few smaller pens around the area such as Collins Bay which has already started reno's.
As for a tourist attraction...the women's prison was sold after it closed to house archives....there is a museum you can visit which is actually really interesting...but where does that funding come from to keep it running? It will be interesting to see what comes of this!

There's already speculation that the new jobs will go to Conservative ridings. No surprise there. Unfortunately this area voted for NDP, so were screwed.

A few decades ago there was a movement for separation of Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario. It fell to the wayside, something like the Rhynoceros party. However it did have it's justification and merit. For a province which has all the resources at hand, crossing the 49th parallel is like falling back in time. Virtually nothing has changed in over a 100 years.

Sudbury may have grown a few more trees then 50 years ago, but with their NDP mentality they continue to miss the boat when it comes to development. Timmins, they've been mining there for about 200 years. Yet it too remains unchanged. In fact if it were not for the mines buying out whole sections of town to tear down for more mining. Much of Timmins would look rundown. Its claim to fame still remains Shania Twain. Drive along the north shore of Lake Superior and you'll find many communities that relly completely on one industry. Marathon was once a logging community, now that's closed and they depend on mining which has been hanging on by the skin of their teeth. Some communities have lost all industry such as White River. Two restaurants are now the biggest employers there, one is A&W.

Oh well, I guess I can rest easy that nothing will ever happen in this area, and I own the next best thing to a cottage.
