I am more then a little Dissapointed with how amateur our derby was run this year. The Derbys in other towns that are over $50k are much more professionally run.
I have just a couple of Things that would make it go way smoother. When a fish is measured it should be called in by radio to someone at a computer where the fish sizes are automatically organized. It wouldn't take much research to find such a program or to even have a spreadsheet that will do it. 2 hours with 700 people waiting is unacceptable. As of right now when a fish is measured they write it down in a book and there are 4-5 different teams with their own books. And handwriting isnt always the easiest to read. I know of many mistakes made last year and this year so people lost their place in line for prizes. With 70k worth of prizes on the line this needs to be organized better. On the lake a contestant should be given a receipt for the fish they have caught so far with the size on it. So if there is a dispute it's easily resolved. And finally. After 2.5 hours waiting the crowd of 700 was finally told there was no door prizes this year. Wow just wow. That couldn't have been mentioned 2 hours previously instead of making us all wait there. And as it turns out after all the fish prizes was handed out THERE WAS LEFTOVER prizes. This derby has grown every year but I think the actions this year may have hurt the derby. I know personally I have gone every year and by now it should be more professionally run. If its not fixed next year I know this is my last shot at the derby. I know I don't want to lose out on a 35k prize because of a clerical error like many did this year on the smaller prizes. |

I agree that it needs to be organized better. As well, why do they need to have a registration after purchasing a ticket to enter? Why couldn't they give the registration number when the ticket is bought? Some people from out of town were complaining about this....as if they need to find the Masonic Lodge the morning of the derby. Who profits from this anyhow? I would like to know this.

If people want to see improvements...maybe you should be attending meetings and volunteering with the prep work. This event took hours and hours of work to prepare for and run, as do most events. And as are many events that are run in Elliot Lake by a group that relies on volunteers....commitment is not what it used to be, let's just say that. So if you have suggestions, go see the organizer, and why don't you commit to helping out for next years event so it is even more successful?

I have already been looking into software for next years derby and I plan on testing it and bringing it to officials attention for next years derby. And as far as volunteering at the derby I already mentioned that I am a participant. Can't measure fish for people while minding my hole. |

Okay I have to ask...why is this derby held on Horne Lake , when it was the sewage overflow lake for Elliot Lake from late 50's to late 70's ?
(Single stage sewage plant was behind arena 100 yards and overflow went in large ditch under highway to Horne Lake .) |
