Siter sites/brother sites/sibling sites- This is often encountered in the dolling community, and commonly referred to as siter sites or sibling sites, since the dolling community is mostly female. When two dollers are very good friends, and keep contant contact with each other, over forums, e-mail, or messenger, one of them may ask the other one if he/she would like to be his/her sister/sibling. A doll is usually made to ask with, and to reply with, but not in all cases.

More defenitions will be added later. ^^

Exclusive bases
Exclusive bases are bases that aren’t offered for free use. Their creators only allow certain people, like members of a certain forum (Forum Exclusive) or friends, to make dolls on them.

Prep-sized dolls
Also called „normal“ or “regular” dolls. They’re made on a certain base style with realistic proportions and are usually ca. 135 pixel tall. The base style is very close to the original doll bases.

Muse
A muse, in terms of dolling, is based on the nine greek muses (Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, and Urania) that inspired all artists. It is an imaginary character presiding over a doller's art, a source of inspiration.

Contest
Some dollers have contests/competitions on their sites. The contests have themes like "Artistic Vision", "Red Dress" ect. You enter one by sending your doll to the owner of the site. When the contest closes, a poll is set up, and you can vote for your favourite entry. Some also have a jury that decides who shall win awards like "Best Shading" and "Most Creative". If you don't know what an award is, see 'award' on this list.

will add more later^^

Award
An "award" for a contest on a doller's site is usually a graphical plaque, often featuring the contest name, the award winner's doll and they're place of winning in the competition (i.e. 1st place, Best Shading.). Sometimes, the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place award winner will recieve a seperate prize from the site owner, like a doll.

Direct Linking
Also known as "hotlinking." When you copy the URL of an image from a site, and paste it on your site/signature/avatar. This steals the webmaster's bandwidth, and if he/she pays for webspace-their money. Hotlinking is forbidden. There are special sites that allow you to upload images for hotlinking purposes.

Signature
A block of text, or an image, that is at the bottom of your every post at a message board. In the dolling world, signatures typically contain a doll, and base links for avatars and the doll in the signature.

Pixel Shading
Shading pixel-by-pixel, without using any other tools. Blending is done using lighter/darker shades of the color.

Heh, about time I contributed to this. XDD For a pixel-shader, my pixel-shading defenition is terrible. XDD

Request
Asking another doller to make a doll and/or pixelart for you. Similar to commisions in the art word. Requests can be specific (i.e. A doll with long, black, curly hair, a green dress with...) or simple (i.e. a doll please?)

Dollers Block
When a doller can't seem to doll. Either they have lost all inspiration, or can't seem to doll anymore. Often dollers say that their muse has left them (see muse) when they experience dollers block.

Adobe Photoshop
A program used for making graphics, dolls, or pixels. This program has tools that a doller or graphic maker can used to tool shade, make blends, etc.

Paint Shop Pro
Also a program used for making graphics, dolls, or pixels. This program has tools that a doller or graphic maker can use to tool shade, make blends, etc.

DND/drag ‘n’ drop
A DND, or Drag 'n' Drop, is also known as a dollmaker. It is sort of like a game, where a doller has already made or used a base and clothes, and another person can drag the clothes or other items around to put on or behind, near, etc., the doll.

never mind, made some new ones XD

Blog
A blog is a space on the web, which is used as an online diary. The author puts down his/her thoughts and little stories about their life, and the readers can comment on it.
There are web companies that offer a blog feature, or even are made for free-bloggin spaces. (for example, LiveJournal)

Tool shading
A method of shading by using the smudge tool, dodge&burn or similar tools in programmes such as Photoshop, Paintshop and Gimp. It allows the doller to make smooth folds and hair.

What about...:
Tag Board
A tool used so that visitors can leave comments for the webmistress, without having to sign a guestbook. These are normally not for chatting usage, only commenting.

If I may make a suggestion, the dolling community isn't a 100% female, and neither is the internet community, so using "webmistress" might not be appropriate.

Sue, I swear, stop spamming!
Agree with Ash, maybe change it to "the site-owner" or whatever.

I've got some. My spelling isn't up to par, sorry.

Dodge- The act of gradually lightning a color or series of colors. Used in dolling for adding highlights as with folds or hair. The tool opposite of Burn. Similar to the tool function "Lighten" See also Tool Shading

Burn - The act of gradually darkening a color or series of colors. Used in dolling for adding shadows or shading as with folds or hair. The tool opposite of Dodge. Similar to the tool function "Darken" See also Tool Shading

Smudge - The act of "pushing" pixels. Used to smooth and blend colors. Used in Tool Shading.

^ may I just add that Dodge and Burn tools were originally created to mimick such techniques in Photography developement. Or is that irrelevant? Or does one of the unwritten rules state that we can't add stuff to other ppl's definitions?

----------------------------

K here are my definitions. Since I can't double post, (even though that last post dated from a few weeks ago <.<) I'm editing this one with them.

GIF - The most used file format for dollz. It enables to keep the pixels intact (as opposed to JPG's) while keeping a small size. It can contain a maximum of 256 colours, allows one-colour transparency, and can support animation.

Gif-Monster - An imaginary creature that "eats" dolls that are saved under the GIF format. What actually happens is that the 256 colours saved within the gifs are not the optimal ones used in the dollz. What results is a dither pattern generated by the computer. The original pixels become corrupted, and usually the colours also get messed up, and the doll has to be redone. The Gif-monster usually "attacks" when a doll is saved as a GIF using MS Paint or when the GIF optimization settings are not set properly.

Transparency - When a doll appears not to have a white rectangle around it when it is displayed on a webpage. This is acheived by saving the doll as a GIF and selecting a specific colour to be "transparent", thereby not showing. A less often used definition for this term would be when some of a doll's clothes are made seethrough by lowering the opacity of the layer they're on.

Definitions:

Base
A basebody (short: base) is a naked pixel-doll body (with or without face), that you can dress up, like a Barbie or a paper doll. You can find bases in varying sizes and styles, like cartoony, manga/anime inspired or realistic.

Frankendolling
The expression"frankendolling" comes from Dr.Frankenstein and "dolling". It's usally used when someone takes parts of dolls (the hair, for example) and and uses them for his/her own (-> like the Frankenstein monster) or simply edits someone else's dolls and claims them as his/her own.
Another term for it is "copyright infringement".

Hiatus
If dollers are no longer interested in dolling or do no longer have the time to do it, they often go on „Hiatus“. It basically means that someone takes a time out; referring to dolling it is a term for closing or no longer updating your site, either for a certain time or forever.

Prop (Palace Definition)
One of the nine 44px by 44px graphics that compose a palace avatars. They can be placed one on top of eachother or side by side depending on the type of avatar you are using. Animations can also be made using alternating props. Traditionally, a regular prep-sized dolls would take two props for the body, one for the head and the six left would be for clothing.

Prop (Current Definition)
An item or animal pixelled next to or as part of a doll, such as a chair, a sword, or a guitar. Can also refer to black and white outlines that serve as "bases" to such items.

When a doller provides a link to the maker of the prop, or base, or pattern, or pallete, used in the doll that the doller is posting on the internet.
