There were some dreams that really did come true. Here she was, in the freaking Baxter Building of all places, rubbing elbows with Peter freaking Parker aka Spiderman! She pushed at the goggles that were sliding down her face a little and moved to pick up a beaker off of the hot plate. Chemistry wasn’t entirely her thing, honestly. She’d prefer to be playing around with physics or the computers, but for right now this was okay.

Okay, so it was worth it to be standing next to Peter and just talking to him. In some ways, knowing the guy behind the mask made Spiderman even cooler. He was just…really cool, in a dorky sort of way, which totally worked for her.

She'd prefer not to be in the protective gear, as there was something unsexy about huge safety goggles and the gigantic aprons and the gloves. Unless you were really, really weird. Or never left the house. And she hadn't gotten to the point where she really had no life yet.

Kitty figured she'd have to be dead or insane for that.

And things were happening. The sense of excitement that one could only really get from testing out a theory of some sort, and knowing that something-even if it wasn’t quite what you wanted-was happening and that you were going to end up with an answer was humming in the air. So she was a geek who hid it well with shopping. As much as she loved hitting up the malls, this was even better. Not that she’d make a full confession of that to Ro, she’d never understand. Jean would though.

She gently settled the beaker with its blue liquid down on the counter, carefully letting go of the tongs. “Alright, it’s gotten to 50 degrees Celsius,” she said, peering at Peter through the large plastic glasses that made the lights look a little fuzzy. “What’s next?”

The whole surreal feeling hadn't quite passed yet. Peter still could not believe that he was standing in one of the labs at the Baxter building with pretty much free reign to experiment with some of the most expensive and high-tech equipment in the world. There was a kind of perma-grin on his face as he stood by Kitty's side and looked around the room.

“Alright, it’s gotten to 50 degrees Celsius,” (Kitty) said, peering at Peter through the large plastic glasses that made the lights look a little fuzzy. “What’s next?”

He loved this. All of this. Even the thick goggles and rubber gloves and aprons that they wore. It was all so cool!

Without verbally answering, Peter extended a vial held by tongs, tipping the glass and spilling the clear liquid into the larger container over the heat source. It immediately simmered and churned, the glass shaking just a little on the burner.

"I still can't really believe we're here," Peter whispered to Kitty confidentially. They weren't alone in the lab, but they were far enough away from people right now that they didn't have to worry about anyone overhearing their conversation. Almost absent-mindedly, he stirred the solution it fizzed and started to turn from liquid to gas. Peter capped the glass container and pulled it off the heat source.

"Looks like you aren't the only one that can phase," he said with a slight grin as he put it aside. Inside the glass the solution that had now phased to gas swirled around in hazy and glimmering clouds.

"I still can't really believe we're here," Peter whispered to Kitty confidentially.

“Me either. It’s just…amazing,” she whispered back, checking the settings on the burners and the temperatures on the thermometers that they had put into the containers that could take them. They all looked to be doing well and nothing appeared like it was about to explode, and for Kitty, that really was enough when it came to chemistry.

"Looks like you aren't the only one that can phase," he said with a slight grin as he put it aside.

Kitty lifted her hand to hide the snicker at the phasing joke. It was so geeky it was almost sad, in it’s horribly cute. Not many people had the ability to make jokes, or puns, however bad they might be, at her ability to shift her molecules. “I’d like to see you phase it through the glass more.”

Which the gas couldn’t do, but she could if she so chose. But there was no contaminating the experiment now.

“As amazing as this is, it’s strangely normal,” Kitty said as she calibrated the equipment some more. “I mean, you know, not the Baxter Building itself but the whole internship thingy. I haven’t done anything normal in over a year. The X-Men don't really do normal.”
