I'll FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINALLY be getting a new comp soon, and I still keep hearing about Vista being a suckfest; does anyone know which one is actually better so I don't waste money?

If you buy a NEW computer with Vista, there should NOT be any problem.

Vista gets a little better after SP1, it's not perfect, but for me, I can't think of many instance of my computer crashing on me (It's Windows, It WILL crash...)

If you can wait, I would say Windows 7, although I don't really know ANYTHING about it (Or, for that matter, I can't really give many opinion on Operating System since I don't really have a clue how they work...)

Vista is basically slightly more graphically appealing, at the cost of very slow computer start-ups. If you know how to turn off some start-up programs it'll make it decent.

At this point it's purely base on personal preference and the fact that vista will be all you can get on a new computer.

david: Some netbook uses XP, but then, they're WAY too slow to run Vista...

Other than that, though, with good configuration (there are millions of websites out there that tells you how to get Vista to run faster...), the difference just isn't there. Of course XP start-up faster no matter what, but not like you can get it anywhere nowaday...

Well, here's the thing: I have a neighbor who's an excellent computer builder. Even though he did build this suckfest of a comp, he warned me beforehand just how bad it was, and considering this one was for free, no money was wasted. But, if we buy the components for him (he can't afford them himself; business is rather slow for him), he'll happily build another one. Sooooo, it'll be a newer comp than this dinosaur, but it depends on what's all inside of it.

Meh, I may as well go with Vista, then; I'll check & see what Vista requires beforehand so we get the correct parts.

Ion: It can't crash any more than this one. >_< Just utilizing IE made it crash constantly, which is why I switched to Firefox in the first place. Even at that, the attempt at loading certain ads on sites cause it to crash, too. At least with a new, better comp, I won't have to worry about either.

david: Again, I doubt it's much slower than this comp's startup. Depending on the parts supplied for the new comp, maybe that won't be a problem.

I'm scheduled to get a new computer this weekend (complete with a Lightscribe DVD burner, which I'm happy with), and it has Windows Vista on it, so I don't think you can really escape it (unless you get an eMachine, which I highly recommend you do NOT do).

Vista isn't as bad as those early horror stories based on my experiences with it on my family's new computer at home. One problem I have is that the start up is so much slower compared XP, and sometimes makes me think it isn't starting up right(if you're used to how fast XP comes up, you'll notice it). The other problem for me is that it likes to kill the dial up connection sometimes, and sometimes won't let it go unless you put it into standby, but that's more a minor incovience.

david: It's still good for those people that only goes on internet and do word processing and looks for mobility, though (And those kind of people are majority...remember, not everyone games nor care about performance...). Plus, no matter what, netbook still uses components you'll find in a normal laptop...

Don't take all caps too seriously.

Anyway yeah, if you run a computer with more than 2 GB of ram, Vista should be fine, anything under that and you must pretty much use XP or it'll lag the hell out of you.

Synjo: Oh no, don't worry; you guys have warned me aaaaaaall about how fucked up eMachines are. ;P

Searchman: Hm, I do know how fast XP starts up (I DID have one with it, but the sonnavabitch who built it for me kept installing busted CD drivers.....fucker....), so that doesn't sound too promising.

Since I won't be dealing with dialup whatsoever after this crapper I'm typing from goes buh-bye, that 2nd part won't be a problem.

david: Maybe THAT'S why my friend's labtop lagged so badly with it.....aha! Ok, now I'm not quite so worried. Meh, I probably will go for quite a bit more that a mere 2 GBs, now that I know how outdated 2 GBs of RAM is these days.

You can always upgrade your RAM later, although I'm fairly that 4gigs of RAM is pretty much a standard spec in terms of desktops nowadays. Laptops might still vary, with 2 being the lowend, but having 2 or more should be pretty common.

It's not horrible, it's just that you'll notice it fairly easily after using XP. The problem with me not thinking it's starting up right is me being somewhat impatient.

In a way, I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in needing a new comp XD It sucks to have to shell-out for a new one, but sometimes it's a necessary evil. Anyways...

Yeah, Vista isn't as bad as it used to be. I personally don't like the interface, but the enhancements almost make up for it. More importantly, XP is nearly obsolete. Microsoft will be putting Vista requirements on more and more merchandise (phasing out the older versions, as they have done in the past), so it would behoove you to go with Vista in order to access the newer programs on the market.

Can I throw my odd hat in and say screw both, shell out the extra and get a Macbook or iMac with OS X 10.5 (Leopard is sickness and Time Machine is a Phoenix Down level life saver)?

You won't have nearly as many problems as you do with Windows in the first place and Macs do allow Windows emulators anyway (yeah, I know it only took a year or so to convert me into a Machead).
