"Court Affirms Online Content Law Unconstitutional" Article on New York Times

EDIT: Please read below

It should be understood that as much as some young people might try to avoid it or at least think it doesn't affect them, there a lot of politics and corporate drama out there that DIRECTLY affect our lives.

Gaming, anime, events, products. Always someone out there who either wants a piece or wants to stop you from stopping their ability to steal the piece that wasn't there and they'll use what they can to do it from you.

Society (pressures and interactions), Politics (law), or Religion (faith and ethics), particularly those last two, ESPECIALLY the last one.

Look at Barack Obama, a lot of his popularity has been generated from the younger generation, including my own. While Clinton and Obama have their appeals, Obama had something going for him that Clinton fucked herself over on.

The rather large percentage of gamers who VOTE. It's not good to be the candidate who has been known to try and push "soccer mom bills" against the gamer nation and then still expect them to vote for you (and this is coming from a Clinton supporter). Obama is the only candidate who has been pushing for INDIVIDUAL and PERSONAL responsibility. The idea that parents take care of your own kids and learn with them and discover for yourself if you don't like the video games they play, not try to force government to create laws that INFRINGE directly on other people's live for years to come because you want to be lazy or let the government raise your children when it's convenient. Parents now-a-days seem honestly less attached to their children (mostly unplanned) and more less interested in actually HAVING to raise them as oppose to coach them in a direction and wish them the best. I'm not saying that should completely control their child's life, but they should be there to actually help and gulde them and understand them and why they like something or need to play a violent video game. NOT BLAME THE VIDEO GAME when their child fucks up.

But I'll stop here because I could go on for a long time on things like this and I'd rather not, I'd rather watch other people rant on and read what they really think of it all.

Anyway, that's what this thread is now.

Incidentally, there is a site dedicated to just this sort of thing:

http://www.gamepolitics.com/

I STRONGLY suggest bookmarking it and reading it on your own time. That stuff does matter because it will come up to change something in our lives, even our gaming lives.

/thumbsup.

People need to grow up and take charge with their children.

Not force everyone else to fall within some stupid terms.

I'll be damned - Congress DOES contain intelligent people..... o_O

I love it when 'soccer moms' lose; and yet, they're more stubborn than George W. Bush......they just don't fucking get it.

Three Things:

First: Please read the first post again if you have already. It has been changed.

Second: Something quite amusing...

Sen. Ted Stevens Indicted, Charged With Making False Statements in Corruption Probe

I may be linking to the article as told by "corrupt as hell" Fox News, but this is really happening. Other outlets are reporting on it as well. For those who might not know him by name, this is Mr. "Series of Tubes" himself. Really, he was just another arm for corporations who want to use the internet for their means to make money, never mind the net was literally built up by USERS not corporations who had to cater to us to get in anyway in the first place.

Now the only tube he’ll have to worry about is protecting his butthole from “Big Bubba.”

Let’s see you keep that tube from getting clogged up, motherfucker!

Third: As long as I was talking about Gamepolitics, this reminded me of something:

Could Game-bashing Mitt Romney Be McCain's VP Choice?

As if McCain was bad enough, I still prefer McCain over those other assholes. ESPECIALLY crossdressing emo freak 9-11 parrot Giuliani (did I mention I'm from NY area?) and gay-game-and Mexican-bashing Mormon zealot Rommey. Last thing we need is both any of them together in the White House signing laws that stab us in the eyes and put money in corporate and right wing pockets under the guise of "morals and values" and on the backs of normal Americans who just want to have a good time and not be interfered with.

Need a refresher?

The site has been bookmarked.

I was going for Obama anyway, but now I'm sold. ^_^ Now I just hope to hell that he lives up to this. And now, I have a reason to despise Romney. I can't see the YouTube video for reasons I'm sure everyone realizes by now, but I get the gist of it. Also, I'm not quite sure what Ted Stevens did regarding the Internet, but, judging by his 'moniker', I have a pretty good idea.

There's probably a lot of political shit I haven't caught up on.

umm wow o.O i also hate rommey, he doesn't understand that what he wants to do isn't what is going to happen, hell if anything i'd rather come up to him and tell him exactly what the hell needs to be done, like keeping kids from watchign said shows/movies or playing games for which they aren't to actually allowed to play because of the rating system which is planted on the box.... but then again he doesn't under stand(painfully obvious) that it isn't the kids who are the problem but it's infact that parents who sit on their ass all fucking day with their thumbs past their rims just letting their kids play or watch whatever they want to, it's pretty obvious that the schools shootings aren't caused by the media(and if it was, blame the kid not the game/movie)

i'm omega heartless...and i approve this message *thumbs up*

Mitt, come on...Mitt...good that I'm going Obama unless there is a SUPER good independent candidate (yes...I do vote independent)

Really, I always support Obama's platform on "it's not the school's fault that the kids do not learn, parents have to take responsibility" (it's same thing applying to TV/games). The parents in this day just don't give a shit about what their kids do. I'm not saying that parents should super-control their kids...but they SHOULD know what the hell is going on.

Kids are not dumb...hell, I wonder how some 13 y.o. girls can figure out a way to travel half way around US to met with their Myspace "friends"...but then the parents/politician blame Myspace, not the kids or themselves and act all innocent. (Same thing with games, TVs, everything!)

Parenting is not easy, but not trying to even do that is just plain lazy.

You know!!!

You can't drive at 13, and someone is signing off on the ticket (since you do have to be of age to buy a ticket online anyway).

How retarded does a parent have to be? Plus, any good parent calls ahead to check if the child really will be at "Cassie's house." Yeah, it's a dick move from the child's POV (it isn't but they wanted to do something else and you got in the way), but you are really thinking about their safety and it's not really that much of dick thing to do.

I guess all those predators have money to burn to buy gift tickets or putting them up on a Greyhound bus (and the parent doesn't notice their child packed a large backpack and is missing for several days). If you do have money like that, you can afford a prostitute instead and it wouldn't get you in as much trouble (keywords: AS MUCH).

-----------------------------
Anyway, I thought this was of interest as well.

Australian Politician Courts the Gamer Vote

You're going to say "I'm American, what does this have to do with me?" I'll say "nothing and everything." I would think by now DMC/DMH members know we're not all Americans here by a long shot and incidentally there are some Aussies and people who have moved or plan to move to Aussieland *cough*Heartless*cough*

People who keep up on censorship know that if you thought America was bad, it's nothing to Australia. The country that PRE-banned Fallout 3, before E3 footage was even out (they're fighting it of course). So people fighting for change there is welcome.

Now, why should this matter to non-Australians and especially Americans?

Two well-known facts:

- Australia has been emulating and idolizing America for the latter part of a generation at least, like a nagging little brother, so a lot of their actions are because we did it first.

- Countries always look at the laws of other countries when they want to get something new done or something pushed. They play the "this country did it" card as much as the "this court case already pushed in favor of this, so we have to." Hence the term "overturning" when a old court decision has been pushed aside for one that would negate it. Just like how people are still trying to overturn "Roe v. Wade" when it comes to abortion.

Anyway, this sort of thing will be ignored or even swamped by people who wants to push negative laws around, but the people who want will recognize it and try to bring it up in our cases. Someone like Barack Obama should likely capitalize on it if he wants to keep our trust.

(As a funny note: I almost typed Barack "Ojama" instead of Barack Obama. Damn you, Yu-Gi-Oh!!!)

I'm baffled by how retarded the reasoning behind these decisions is.

'Violent video games have a negative effect on children, so let's restrict the age ratings of these games even further.'

Take into account what's being addressed here - the effects of video games on children. This assumes that these children are already in possession of such a game, as otherwise it obviously couldn't possibly have an effect on them. And how does a child get their sticky little hands on such a game? Simple - they ask Mummy and Daddy for it. In which case, what the fuck is tightening the age ratings on these games going to do?!

It won't stop Mummy and Daddy from buying these games for their children, so what difference does it make?

Parents need to be more responsible with regards to what they expose their children to, and I reckon that even retailers should do something about this. I was in the supermarket before, and I remember seeing one of those signs which says that it's illegal for someone to purchase alcohol on behalf of a minor. Why don't they just enforce such a rule for video games too? Surely that would help to some degree.

That's just my penny on the matter (as opposed to 'two cents' - DID U C WOT I DID THAR? LOL).

I agree with the previous statement completely.

But anyway, this one sort of hurts because it's the sort of things other places like Youtube, Veoh and Dailymotion are likely to try next:

Video Hosting Site Bans Game Play Footage as Not "Creative Expression"

incidentally, I'm one of those guys who uploads gameplay footage or spoiler endings on my Youtube as well.

All I can do is make the obvious statement of 'who are they to judge what constitutes 'creative expression'?'

Balls to 'em.

Good lord, Australia's government is LITTERED with soccer moms!!!! Except for the one Senator, they were all a bunch of retards. I mean, it sounds like the U.K. isn't doing too well, either (and I feel sorry for the 3 of you here), but Australia needs to be removed of this crap BADLY. I happen to know an Australian guy on NG, and I had no idea that he was living in that deep a pile of shit over there.

Jack Thompson........I'm surprised I don't know that name; I currently live in Florida, and you'd think I'd know about this moron by now. I'm not surprised, though, as Florida's government is loaded with morons. My advice: DO NOT MOVE HERE, AND IF YOU'RE HERE ALREADY, GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN.

I've never even heard of Vimeo - maybe that's why.

You seriously don't know who Jack Thompson was(though that might be a blessing considering how much of a giant annoying troll he is)? Ok, that's it. There is going to be mandatory web surfing for news in your future young man :penguin_6:.
