Title: DMC at the movies.
Description: Your thoughts on recently seen movies.

SearchmanDS - June 10, 2009 05:47 PM (GMT)
Since it's the summer, which is filled with ample time and blockbusters, I felt that a topic along these lines would be appropriate. Anyway, no real rules, just post your thoughts about movies you gone to seen recently(within the past month or so).

I'll start us of with Star Trek. I was a bit skeptical at first since it was a reinvisioning of the old school, and that either turns out hated or loved. I had heard second hand from Shinobi that it was good, which mitigated my skepticism and I walked in with no set expectations. All I can say...WOW. It was great. For someone who is more or less a casual fan of the series.

What made this movie for me:

-The acting. All of the characters, major and minor, felt authentic. Bones and Spock especially. I really felt like they were channeling the original spirit of the character, but without bible thumping them.

-The score. The theme for the Enterprise sent shivers down my spine every time it played. It felt so majestic and powerful, what you'd expect of flagship of the franchise. And at the end, the remixed theme of the old TV show was the perfect little touch to top off the movie, which made it feel like a beginning, not an end.

-The story. Star Trek has always been about science, space, and time. This movie does not fail to deliver on that.

-The action/special effects. It wouldn't be Star Trek without this either, and this movie REALLY shows off with how far effects have come since the last Trek movie. One thing I really like is how they acknowledge the vacuum of space at different points, which to my knowledge hasn't really been done.

All of this mixes together to create a great movie. It reboots Star Trek for the older fans, which they have been lacking a series to follow since Enterprise, and brings the new fans in by having story that anyone can understand. If you have not seen this movie yet, go see it now while it is still out in theatres. It's worth every penny.

LOVED that movie with all my heart. Not as much nerdy and loved the acting.

Me and my sister would LOL on Chekov/Yelchin.

I ended up going with a bunch of my friends to see The Hangover for a free pre-screening the night before it's actual theatre release. It was an amazing movie that kept me laughing nonstop.

I finally saw Avatar yesterday........and it's difficult to put the awesomeness of this movie into words, but I'll try anyway: Simple premise, brilliant execution. Whether said premise (or part of it) has been done before becomes irrelevant after you've seen this movie; it's just that good.

If you haven't seen it yet, you need to be shot.

Except that most people are SPLIT highly on that movie. You either liked it because you're a special effects whore or hated it for being unnecessarily tear-jerker for the sake of it, extremely predictable, ripped directly off 4 movies before it and just another Greenpeace movie to throw at you.

Pretty yes, good, only if you leave your intelligence at the door and certainly not worthy of a Golden Globe, which is why people don't care for that award since they'll give it to anyone for anything.

Or to put it another way:

I still have never seen Slumdog Millionaire either.

I saw Sherlock Holmes the same night as Avatar and I enjoyed that movie SO much more. Robert Downey Jr when you go past his troubled past is and has always been a FANTASTIC actor and he plays a very convincing Holmes. His chemistry with Jude Law is no less perfect and since it's obviously setting up for a sequel (since you have to have Holmes's true rival archvillain in the story), I can't wait for that.

Really? Yes, like I said, I'm fully aware that this premise has been done before, but it was still brilliantly done. I will admit, the graphics were an integral part of the movie, but the storyline was still executed extremely well. One has to look at the whole thing altogether, not just the parts.

However, perhaps I'm a tad biased on the storyline......it was extremely reminiscent of the situation with the Native Americans (something that still sickens me to this day), and the fact that the Na'vi won in this movie made me yell "WHY THE FUCK COULDN'T IT HAVE ENDED THIS WAY IN REAL LIFE!?" on the inside.

My movie geek friend that I went with yesterday said pretty much the same thing. After seeing Iron Man, I know just how good of an actor he is, so it wouldn't surprise me that he pulled this off.

Something else I have to ask: My friend also said that Transformers: ROTF was crap compared to the first one; granted, sequels often pale in comparison to the originals, but still, it looked as awesome as the first one. What did you guys think of it? I want to know before I go buy the DVD of it.

He was in full agreement over Star Trek, though.

Nicole_Sera - January 25, 2010 02:00 AM (GMT)
I hated Transformers 2, it was big and stupid even by summer blockbuster standards. Not to mention such stupid high concepts as decepticon girl and transformers heaven.

Ion - January 25, 2010 03:58 AM (GMT)
To add onto Nicole_Sera...

Transformer 2 is one of the few movies that I actually watch in theater (I didn't even watch Avatar yet...but yes, I did watch the Yu-Gi-Oh movie in theater, and yes, I hate it), and guess what? A big disappointment in story, as usual.

Yes, the CG and stuff are still really high quality, but that's it. The story is absurdly bad, with Michael Bay trying to throw in random characters at some random time, with some stupid character that's unnecessary. Yes, I'm talking about you, the parents, and the 2 stupid robots that serve no purpose.

And yeah, it goes on and on and on...

redbaronii - January 25, 2010 05:19 AM (GMT)
Topic becomes active again...

My 2 cents on Avatar: it's good graphic, the storyline to me is kind of meh, nothing too special although it's not terrible. The only thing I'm surprise is the packed theater 1 month after the release (I cannot even get the IMAX 3D tickets)

Will somehow find YGO the movie (new one, the old one is crap) to watch...although no way the legal way.

He was in full agreement over Star Trek, though.

A extremely predictable storyline that everyone can discern within the first 5 minutes of the movie is not well written or executed. Just PRETTY.

Half of that entire movie is to make you sad or "feel something." You knew exactly who was going to die and by the end of the movie you are left very dissatisfied because the only surprise is that it would be that predictably disappointing.

Signorney Weaver, a FANTASTIC actress, wasn't utilized and then killed off.

Don't get me started on Michelle Rodiguez. I swear, it's like she dies in half of her movie and killing her in this was pointless.

In fact, why the fuck did Iwya only decided to help AFTER killing off everyone else who was helping? Did it want a sacrifice in blood?

What actually happened to earth? What was so important about Obtainium? It was the BIGGEST McGuffin I've ever seen.

That's just a few problems most people had with this movie and those people at least LIKED it, let alone the ones who didn't. Most all of my friends who are school teachers felt the same (most of them are English and Writing teachers, one of whom is always on Facebook posting about the grades he has to give his students in California). These "Humans are Bastards" movies and plots are getting more and more common.

And dude, I'm Native American (mostly Cherokee from Florida from my Grandmother who is living half but also Sioux), but you don't have to be to understand he was using that as a hooking point for more tear-jerking. "Rich White People in Trouble" or being "persecuted" isn't very interesting going fill movie seats.

Also it wasn't just Native Americans, it was also partially WW2-ish. The direct racism and prejudice against those who were positive on the "enemy" plus the whole "destroy something important to them with a huge explosion to send a message and nothing else because the action itself was pointless." Very American toward Japan. After all, the war was basically over BEFORE the bombs were dropped. It was only done to drop the hammer and ensure no trouble would come out for a long time. So instead you have a paranoid distrusting society and nation that has essentially taken over the world any and will always have some love/hate with you.

And let's not even get into Transformers 2: The Jewel of the Nile. My favorite movie of the whole of 2009 was still WATCHMEN. I will stab anyone who says something bad about that movie. Critics absolutely loved it (I'm definitely an looks for the art type of movie fan).

I was absolutely in love with it too. Do you know how much?

That much. I'll probably never spend that much on ONE SINGLE MOVIE (not a boxset of multiple movies) ever again... unless there's a big version of The Dark Knight like this, that I'll get too.

BTW Baron, off-topic: I see you updated your little deck list thing, does that mean you and Magic are back on speaking terms and you've come on board the Planewalker train? No Zendikar?

DarkKabuto - January 25, 2010 05:27 PM (GMT)
I've watched Sherlock and It's Complicated.

Complicated is lolzers.

a-hole w/ 9000atk - January 25, 2010 11:30 PM (GMT)
Alright, the concensus seems to be that TF:ROTF sucked........I'd still like to rent it, though.

Almost forgot about Watchmen; I'll be sure to get it.

...........

Am I really that much of a biased dork for having liked the movie? :penguin_22:

Aw, hell..........

I was about to make an argument on how many TV shows, animes and movies have horribly similar plotlines, but that's a bit TOO similar......

Ok, ya got me there. I was expecting a little more explanation on that.....maybe they will in the sequel.
