Title: Card Review #196
Description: Adjudicator - Voltanis

redbaronii - April 18, 2006 03:13 AM (GMT)
Finally back with a whole new card review. This time, I would do a card that I had long promised to do: the judger ("adjudicator") of all things: Voltanis.
===============
EOJ-JP023
Adjudicator - Voltanis
Light/Angel/8/2800/1400
When you successfully activate a Counter Trap, this card may be special summon by sacrificing all monsters on your field. When this card is successfully special summon this way, you may destroy number of cards on opponent's field equal to number of Angel sub-type monsters sacrificed.
===============
Art:
Despite the name sounds so much like a myth character, it's actually not. Even if it's kind of rare that this kind of "legends" do not have relations with myths...

Anyway, this angel, as most people would have say, does not look like an angel at all. Well, not 100% "not like", for example, it have the symbol wings. The thing that most people cannot stand is the "single eye, [Dark Eye Illusionist] face", plus the "non-cohesive body" makes them looks more like Beast than Angels...

Otherwise, it got the "judgment wand" (like the one in Executioner's hand), the [Tualatin] style body ("metal-ly"), and of course, the great background showing "dawn in someone's life".
RATING: 8.4/10

Stats/Requirement:
This is a Level 8 Light/Angel with 2800/1400 stats. First, 2800/1400 is a very normal stats for a level 8 monster (especially the 2800 attack...since 17 other level 8 monsters have it), 1400 defense...well, it's Witch searchable (Voice: when in this world all of the sudden you add back this sentence, especially with [Witch] still banned and it had been banned for a long time). Light/Angel? Well, most Angels are Light anyway, so this card have the synergy with the main supports. Otherwise, all I'm going to say is, you should never ever "hard-cast" this legend...
RATING: 7.7/10

Effect:
As for why? After [Devil King Dragon - Vandalgion], this is the second card that can be special summon/"benefit you" by playing Counter Traps.

Of course, that brings us to the first discussion: which one is better as the "bomb"? Just the pros

Voltanis:
- Any counter Traps can trigger this card
- Flexibility

Vandalgion:
- No need for sacrificing your own monsters
- No need for other cards (on your field/deck, except Counter Traps) to help this card.

But now, what you do by sacrificing your own monsters? Well, as "extra kick" to the effect that benefit you to play the Counter Traps and the drawback, you get to "judge" opponent's cards and destroy them.

Of course, the obvious problem with this is: what if there's no monsters, and what if they're NOT ANGELS?

Well, that means you MUST play Angels with this card. Well, what to put?

For once, of course, [Artemis of Harvest] and [Reiyad of Relief], both cards that benefit you by playing the Counter Traps, helps. In addition, cards like [Shining Angel] or [Marshmellon] are great at staying on your field.

Now, which Counter Traps to use? You can basically use any Counter Traps with Voltanis, and it's common sense to tell which ones are good and which ones are bad.

RATING: 5.7/10

OVERALL - 5.8/10 - Well, you may say I should give this card higher rating...however, the effect is too dependant on something hard to control in today's metagame: number of monsters on your field (due to numerous monster destruction cards). Since the effect is one-time-use, that make this card's effect sometimes useless, and the worse card is, you have to sacrifice everything on your field for nought. But looking at the other side, the whole Counter-Angel theme is not bad, and this card is great as a big bomb to opponent. Destruct him? Negate...Theft? Negate...you can just bring judgment to every opponent's action.

The correct name is Voltanis the Adjudicator. Get it right or Mr. UDE is gonna sue you. XD

Actually it's very hard to see the art with the picture so small. Anyway to link it to a bigger version of the picture?
