This was under a rock in about 3 feet of water off the southeast coast of Cuba. I can't find a good match for it in the books. Could it be Stenoplax bahamensis?

Dear Les,

As often chitons are not always easy to ID on a picture only. The illustrated specimen belongs to Stenoplax and 3 species are known from Caribbean waters. The following key can help in differentiating the species:

1a Tail valve as long as wide, mucro postmedian . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2
b Tail valve wider than long, mucro central . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3
2a Concentrical riblets on end valves and lateral areas with the grooves
between them smooth or nearly so . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . S. floridana
b Concentrical riblets with the grooves between them transversely latticed
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . S. bahamensis
3 End valves with smooth, somewhat wavy concentric ridges; Atlantic species
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . S. purpurascens

Based on this key and on other features like coloration I think the species is Stenoplax purpurescens (CB Adams, 1845)

Thanks for sharing this nice picture,
Bruno.
