![]() 8/28 Not being familiar with jaspideus, I asked for Bill Fenzan's opinion: "Would you agree with the ID? (jaspideus)" 8/28 Bill replied" "My first thought would be to compare these shells to C. mindanus Hwass in Brug., 1792 rather than C. jaspideus." I then forwarded Bill's comment to Charlotte with a few of my own: "Take a look at John’s paper. Lots good photos. I’m not too good with Cones, but your shells did not jump out at me as being jaspideus. However, I’ve only seen photos of jaspideus. http://theconecollector.net/ Click on DOWNLOAD TCC #14a The paper also has pictures of jaspideus. For more photos of true jaspideus, see http://www.coneshell.net/pages/c_jaspideus.htm As soon as I get a break I’ll go through Phil Poland’s shells and see if there are any mindanus. I personally doubt any of the photos on Jaxshells of jaspideus from Florida are valid. Most are probably C. pealii and those along the SE coast are pealii, mindanus, or just plain questionable, as I believe is also the case for your shell taken off Duval Co. See my discussion of jaspideus on LTS. There is at least one more addition I’ve yet to make that is pretty persuasive supporting the position that jaspideus not in Florida and stearnsii not on east coast. We’ve pretty well established that the report of a stearnsii off North Carolina is either spurious or impossible to substantiate. Harry may have a different opinion when he gets back." |
