Title: Who still plays Pokémon?

Fridgecrisis - April 16, 2009 07:57 AM (GMT)
I do. I love that stupid game, even if everyone thinks I'm a complete loser. I just got into breeding and EV training and such. I'm such a nerd.

Pokémon is a game of secrets. A child can play it and enjoy it, but it takes full-blown mathematical formulas to figure out how to manipulate it to your best advantage, and you can't just figure them out on your own (unless you're a genius, I guess). I also love how you can spend 100 hours on that game and STILL not have all 150 Pokémans. VALUE FTW!

Blue Farce - April 16, 2009 11:06 AM (GMT)
Don't you mean... what's it, 450, 550 now? Holy Christ.

I only played... like, R/B/Y. A little bit of S/G, but I don't think I went more than like three badges in that.

The gimmicks like berries and stuff are cool, but the Pokemon designs have gotten lamer and lamer since then. I mean... Spoink? Wtf.

Zeratanus - April 16, 2009 12:10 PM (GMT)
nah, blue. later pokemons games actually have cut out the originals so its still conceivable to catch them all. (I asked my niece a while back x3)

I still play blue/leaf green every now and then, but never for long - my blue version has all 150 (+ a gamesharked and traded to me Mew) and, well, everything ever. and leaf green is on emulator, and i really havent bothered with it <<

Blue Farce - April 16, 2009 01:16 PM (GMT)
I know it's a really stupid thing to whine over, but goddamn I miss the old Gust animation.

Zeratanus - April 16, 2009 01:23 PM (GMT)

what about SAND ATTACK!? YOU DONT MISS SAND ATTACK!?

Springs - April 16, 2009 01:55 PM (GMT)
I stopped right after Diamond/Pearl, since the game wasn't much different from earlier Pokemon games :\

I know my brother still plays though, as a matter of fact he's totally hardcoring on Platinum.

Blue Farce - April 16, 2009 07:32 PM (GMT)
...They changed sand attack? Wtf do you do to goddamn sand attack?

LittleRedRodeo - April 16, 2009 10:06 PM (GMT)
Yarr, I really loved those old games. I played Blue version--got all 150 + a gamesharked Mew. And I adored my Silver version even more, new Pokemon and all. I only got to 228 with that version, though. The battery to the clock mechanism in GSC eventually wore down or broke. My game remained fine--as far as I know, it's still fine to this day. But both my brothers' Gold versions died, so. So yeah.

A few years later, like 2006, I picked up Pearl 'cause I thought it would be fun. It is fun, lotsa nostalgia, but it also reminds me why I stopped Pokemon in the first place. The creature designs just got lamer and the challenges got *old-timer voice* all new-fangled and complicated.

Also, the music sucks.
And and and (you think you made a big deal about Gust?) when you're riding your bike--to awful music--the game forces you to dismount every time you pass a route/town gate. SO ANNOYING. Way to un-do four generations of Pokemans, thar.[/rant]

nerkel - April 16, 2009 10:24 PM (GMT)
I spent 120 hours on Pokemon: Crystal. I nearly had every single one obtainable through conventional means, then my brother wiped my save.

I picked up Pearl a bit later, and I could never force myself to get past l. 60.

I haven't had it in me to pick up another pokemon game ever since e_e

Nyx - April 16, 2009 10:40 PM (GMT)
The newer the generation the lazier I got in terms of 'catchin' them all' and all that.

I had all 150 pokemon on my Blue, all 250 pokemon on Crystal (both games had Mew, but Crystal didn't have Celebi; so we could say it's 151 and 251 respectively); mind you, I've obtained all my crap conventionally without gamesharkin' or anything like that.

After that I mucked around with Emerald a bit, never ever touched it after I defeated the Elite 4 and completed the 3rd gen. Pokedex (didn't bother obtaining all of the previous 2 generations, I got lazy).

Then I played Diamond for a bit before I got bored right before the Elite 4. Never finished that one.

My sister is currently hardcoring Platinum atm, not unlike Springs' lil bro.

Also, related.

But I think Riley is arguably hot for a Pokemon character.

I totally fit in with those two then...hahah. Well, I'm not hardcoring Platinum, but I did pick it up...also got it's ridiculously huge guide to go with it...

I'm such a dweeb.

That's where I'm stuck. I've played like three times since... August 2008. I just can't get the energry to train 'em to beat 'em.

I guess the big difference between the current gen and the first gen is that this feels more like work and less like fun!adventure-Flapjack-style.

Also, NZ gets all the awesome Pokeman events :C

NYC used to have one of the biggest Pokemon centers around, but they demolished it and created a Nintendo World instead.

Hm, really? Don't think I've ever been to one, or even heard about one taking place in Auckland at one point or another.

Blue Farce - April 17, 2009 01:13 AM (GMT)
Wtf is a Nintendo World? I don't get cool stuff like that here. I think.

Springs - April 17, 2009 01:14 AM (GMT)
Imagine it as a mall where all they sell are Nintendo stuff.

Nyx - April 17, 2009 01:15 AM (GMT)
Can I possibly shake Mega Man's hand at Nintendo World?

Springs - April 17, 2009 01:19 AM (GMT)
I doubt it.

Nyx - April 17, 2009 01:20 AM (GMT)
=(

Also.

Just curious, in Red/Blue, which of the starter Pokemon did you fellas choose?

And if you didn't play any of the 1st gen. games (boooooooo), just say which anyhow. :3

Springs - April 17, 2009 01:23 AM (GMT)
I had all Yellow, Green, Blue and Red, and I basically chose the Pokemon of each game's color.

Blue Farce - April 17, 2009 01:26 AM (GMT)
I played Blue enough times that I'd taken all three at least once. I 'm fairly certain my favorite was Charmander, though. I suck at consistency, apparently, as my loev of turtles seems to not extend to hueg ones with giant deadly water cannons.

Nyx - April 17, 2009 01:27 AM (GMT)
Christ, you serious?

I chose Squirtle solely for the awesome that is Blastoise.

Scrap that, they're all awesome. Freakin' dragon, canon turtle and killer plant dino.

Blue Farce - April 17, 2009 01:58 AM (GMT)
It's just... I dunno. There's just something about Blastoise and Venusaur... too stubby, I think? Like, Venusaur was a walking planter - kinda awkward.

On a completely unrelated note, apparently I do have a LAN set up, but it's telling me I need a cable. Can I like switch it over to wireless or something?

LittleRedRodeo - April 17, 2009 02:19 AM (GMT)
I played them all a few times, I think, but my favorite ended up being Squirtle.

Because, like, Blastoise is awesome.

I chose Charmander! I pretty much choose the fire one on each game, though. :D Like now...I have Chimchar! :D

InColdBloodXx - April 17, 2009 03:11 AM (GMT)
I have Pokemon Red, Yellow, blue, Gold, and Silver
* _ *
I haven't played them in years, though.
I want to bring them back up on my good ol' Gameboy Advanced.

Riken - April 17, 2009 03:26 AM (GMT)
Let's see...

I have Pokemon: LeafGreen, Emerald, Diamond, Platinum

I used to own...red? But, that was a LONG time ago.

Fridgecrisis - April 18, 2009 05:36 PM (GMT)
I started with Blue, but I had good friends who had Red too. I loved those days. I remember actually getting all 150 pokemon one time, but I've only done it once (since none of my close friends played the game after a while and I couldn't afford to just buy another gameboy and game for myself).

One awesome thing we did was try to do a sort of four-way battle, back in the Game Boy Color days. We had this link cable that had four endings, two for GBC and two for the original Game Boy. But we hooked up two Colors(or Pockets, I can't remember) AND two originals and tried to all battle each other at once. Surprisingly, it sorta worked... until a Lv. 121 Voltorb with three health bars showed up and owned us all.

The very first starter Pokemon I picked was Charmander. I remember that first play-through so vividly, even though I was, what... eight years old? I started over so many times that I picked all three of them, though. With FireRed, I chose Squirtle, but I still like all three of those original starters.

My girlfriend just got a DS and Platinum, and I'm so excited to get one too (I'll probably get Diamond though) so I can finally battle and trade with someone. It has been MUCH too long since I've actually been able to play with someone else.
