Well, it's about time to write Episode VI of the Election Wars.
Harper won a minority, with 124 seats. The Liberals, under the underappreicated Martin took 104 The Bloq got a bloodied nose, with only 51 seats The NDP got big gains, up to 29 One Independent took a spot, and that's that. Well, it looks like my faith in humanity was bang on. Who in their right mind can possibly elect someone who 8 years ago calls us a, "Northern European Welfare State"? How is conservatism a "Beacon"? Let's look at scandals, which were the riding focus (thanks to our media, which apparently thought it was "time for change" too). We have Adscam - at the tune of about 50 million in surplus funds. Done under the Chretian era, remembered by Justice Gomery and the crux of the Harper compaign. COST: $50 000 000 Then, we see the Republican Scandal. It's a biggie, and was publically announced in 2003. With it, we see $400 000 000 000 vanish, a $10 000 000 000 000 surplus turn into a $11 000 000 000 000 deficit. We've watched 17 800 people, of whom 2500 were American meet their deaths. Estimated corporate contracts in this heinous invasion meet up at about $3 000 000 000. It's called Operation Iraqi Freedom. COST: $400 000 000 000 (USD) 2500 American soldiers about 300 coalition deaths 15 000 dead Iraqis So, who's worse - A 10 year old scandal, taken from a great surplus? Or a $400 000 000 000, 20 800 lost lives and no progress from a bankrupt nation? I'll let you decide. |

Keep in mind the bottom one is an American cost, not a Canadian one. Though the Adscam was way overblown.
Of course, the country has no gone to hell. I used to sleep at night thinking that no matter how bad shit got, I was still better off than the States. Well, now that thought is screwed. Harper will mess it up though, and lose the trust many have in the conservatives. I predict a new election by the time I can vote. |
